Both of my parents were teachers so they had access to school library's to be able to bring me home books to read. Where is the Green Sheep? was one of my favorite books as a child and I remember my mom reading this to me a lot and then me reading it myself. I think that these types of books laid the foundation for me in my reading life. When I found out there was a whole series of these books I was very excited and told my parents that I needed every single one of them. These books were easy to read, and quite humorous which allowed me to enjoy them. However, this book in particular Murder Most Unladylike , I remember enjoying reading. It helped me realize the genres that I enjoy the most when reading are crime and mystery. At my high school, every first period of the day we had to read for 10 minutes, and looking back now I think this was beneficial for me as it gave me a designated reading time to sit down and enjoy reading an actual book. In particular, I found a love for sports autobiographies and biographies. In fact, Brett Lee was one of my favorite cricketers and when his book came out he was doing book signings at the local mall which I asked my mom to take me to. I do think my parents doing this made me enjoy reading a little more. Magazines were easy for me to read and combined with pictures and activities, I looked forward to getting into bed a reading some of the magazines. Girlfriend magazines were my favorite and some nights I remember reading the whole thing. However, the experience I had with sporting books has shaped the books that I do read now. The most recent book I have read is Steph Curry's book. It was only a short drive away and it allowed me to see the wide variety of books there are and which ones interest me the most. I don't think that I took advantage of the library as much as I could have as a kid. It would help me create a classroom environment that is inviting and conducive to reading. By surrounding students with a variety of engaging reading materials I hope to foster a sense of curiosity and excitement about reading. As I have grown up I have realized that reading is a very positive and important aspect of life that I should have participated in more when I was younger. I can now pass along this knowledge in a classroom environment by sharing, discussing, and modeling positive reading habits. I can help children who may not want to read understand that great experiences can come out of reading and that there are so many books out there for everyone to explore and enjoy.
