I grew up with many books as a child. Both of my parents were teachers so they had access to school library's to be able to bring me home books to read. Where is the Green Sheep? was one of my favorite books as a child and I remember my mom reading this to me a lot and then me reading it myself. I think that these types of books laid the foundation for me in my reading life. My mom has said to me that I was an early reader and I think this was mainly due to the amount of books I had access to and were read to me at a young age.

In primary school I distinctly remember having reading groups within our classrooms. Sometimes it would be the teacher reading to the whole class and other times it was parents who came in to read to us in small groups. These groups gave me different types of books to look at and explore what I may like to read.

I started to search out books in primary school that I could relate to. Obviously a book with my name on it was going to be one of those books. These Rainbow magic books had many different fairies with different names, but at this point in my life if I was going to read I wanted it to be something that was to do with my life around me.

I got gifted The 13-Story Treehouse as a present one year and loved it! When I found out there was a whole series of these books I was very excited and told my parents that I needed every single one of them. These books were easy to read, and quite humorous which allowed me to enjoy them. Looking back, these books were definitely the first long books I read and they got me into reading longer books and series.

I wouldn't say that I was much of a reader during high school. However, this book in particular Murder Most Unladylike , I remember enjoying reading. It helped me realize the genres that I enjoy the most when reading are crime and mystery. At my high school, every first period of the day we had to read for 10 minutes, and looking back now I think this was beneficial for me as it gave me a designated reading time to sit down and enjoy reading an actual book. This experience of reading 10 minutes a day transferred into my home life and I found that even at night time I wanted to read the book to find out what was going to happen next.

Growing up playing many sports definitely had an influence into the types of books I enjoyed reading. In particular, I found a love for sports autobiographies and biographies. In fact, Brett Lee was one of my favorite cricketers and when his book came out he was doing book signings at the local mall which I asked my mom to take me to. We lined up and he signed my copy, I remember thinking how cool this was and I couldn't wait to come home and start reading it.

As I was not much of a reader as a teen, my parents suggested that I try magazines in an attempt to keep up my reading. I do think my parents doing this made me enjoy reading a little more. Magazines were easy for me to read and combined with pictures and activities, I looked forward to getting into bed a reading some of the magazines. Girlfriend magazines were my favorite and some nights I remember reading the whole thing. I ended up getting a monthly subscription to Girlfriend magazines so each month I looked forward to receiving the magazine in the mail and being able to read it.

However, the experience I had with sporting books has shaped the books that I do read now. The most recent book I have read is Steph Curry's book. I definitely have an interest in books to do with sporting figures as my whole life has been based around sport.

My local library was a great tool for me to gain access to many books. It was only a short drive away and it allowed me to see the wide variety of books there are and which ones interest me the most. I don't think that I took advantage of the library as much as I could have as a kid. I think if I had gone there more often and rented out books I might have developed more of a love for reading as I got older.

Shaping the Approach in the Classroom

My personal reading identity may shape my approach in the classroom because the experiences I have encountered will help me to set up my classroom so children have opportunities to explore their reading interests. It would help me create a classroom environment that is inviting and conducive to reading. By surrounding students with a variety of engaging reading materials I hope to foster a sense of curiosity and excitement about reading. As I have grown up I have realized that reading is a very positive and important aspect of life that I should have participated in more when I was younger. I can now pass along this knowledge in a classroom environment by sharing, discussing, and modeling positive reading habits. I can help children who may not want to read understand that great experiences can come out of reading and that there are so many books out there for everyone to explore and enjoy.
