The book I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, is about a young girl that lives in Swat, Pakistan. She likes to go to school even though girls aren’t supposed to go. Malala’s immediate family includes her mother, father, and two younger brothers. Her father owned the school where Malala went to with her classmates. Malala was usually at the top of her class for academics. She always wanted to be the best in her class. Her mother was a housewife where she worked and cooked at home. Malala likes to read, watch tv, and play games outside with her neighbors and brothers. Her family is very close and she cares a lot about them. Malala is very close with her dad. He is very protective of her and supports her to go to school and for her to make her own decisions. She is a very active girl. Malala has many friends such as her best friend, Shazia.

The Taliban was from Afghanistan but moved into Pakistan, then soon into Swat Valley. The Taliban didn’t want girls to go to school because it wasn’t in their religious beliefs. They threatened girls and Malala’s dad and wanted him to shut it down. Soon there was a radio speaker that soon took over Swat Valley and caused people to turn away from their old ways. The radio speakers name was Radio Fazlullah. The radio station talked about how the people of Swat Valley were dishonoring the Islamic laws. Soon stores and schools were shut down because of the Radio Fazlullah and his teachings. People became brainwashed to his teachings and started changing their ways. Malala and her father didn’t agree with the teachings of the Radio Fazlullah so he continued to run the school and she continued to go to school. The Taliban threatened the school and bombed schools around the area.

Malala and her family decided to move to a different location to live with their extended family so they Taliban couldn’t find Malala and her family. Malala still wanted to go to school so she joined the school that was near her. After a while they decided to move back to Swat Valley into their home. When they got back they realized their school was being used as a base by the Taliban. Her father found a letter left by the Taliban for him. It said that they wanted Malala dead.

Malala started to speak out using her diary that she secretly wrote against the Taliban and news broadcasts that were seen all over the world. She started to gain even more national and worldwide fame for being an advocate for young girls' and their education rights. During all of the uprising Malala’s father always believed in her but was scared the Taliban was still targeting him.

One day Malala was on the bus with her friends coming home from school when the bus driver took an unusual stop. A man pulled the bus over, asked which girl was Malala, and then shot her in the face. Malala was immediately taken to an army hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan. Malala was given an operation. A pair of British doctors came to see her at the hospital and determined that Malala had to moved to a different hospital if she wanted to survive. When Malala woke up she was in Birmingham, UK.

It was a miracle that she recovered from her shooting. In the end she used this incident to speak out even more against the Taliban and the violence in her home country. Malala received the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 in 2014. To this day Malala continues to speak out about education rights for girls.

Racism Issues in Haiti (Issue Summary)

A big problem in Haiti and the Dominican Republic is racism. Both countries have a population of about 10 million people. Haiti is much more poorer than the Dominican Republic. A big part of the problem of racism is the name of both countries. This is because Haiti is also named Hispaniola which means “little Spain.” It is considered impolite to use this name because it will seem that we are allowing murder, rape, and mass murder. In the Dominican Republic they use the term “Quisqueya.” This word is considered historical inaccurate because it is used to describe the difference between the Dominicans and Haitians. This is a struggle for many people because it lowers the amount of jobs that are able to be fulfilled due to the racism. This is related to Malala because she struggles with everyday judgement being a young girl who went to school and wanted an education as citizens in Haiti and the Dominican Republic struggle with their racism issues.
Sources :
https://www.vox.com/a/borders/haiti-dominican-republic
https://www.pambazuka.org/governance/racism-island-haiti

I, Malala Yousafzai, am willing to try to resolve this conflict by speaking up and letting you know that the people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic are not alone and they have each other. I will do the most that I can coming to the countries to speak with each and every one of you. In my home country of Pakistan, girls’ struggle with education rights and I will not let any of you struggle with racism.
