Charles Dickens was an English writer of the Victorian era . He was born in 1812 at Portsmouth, a city in the south of England. His family moved to London in 1822. The Dickens family often had money problems. For a while Charles had to leave school to work in a factory. He later wrote about the difficult working conditions he experienced, in novels like Oliver Twist and David Copperfield.

His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was published in 1837.

London

In the 19th century London was the capital of the largest Empire of the world but was a city of contrast. Beautiful and crowded, with sparkling streets and intellectual salons, but also polluted, with roads covered in mud and a lot of poor people begging around the corner. This was the London where Dickens used to live.

Work houses

Work houses were places where people with no home or job, expecially children, were forced to work all day with a very poor salary.

Living in a workhouse was the last thing people wanted to do. If a man with a family had to enter a workhouse, his whole family had to go with him.

They often used children for work because they were smaller than adults, and could do precision job.

The working conditions were horrible, and the lack of food was a real problem.

The men, women, and children lived in different parts of the building. Children only spent a little time with their parents. Large groups slept in the same room and had to share beds.

After the new laws for childs labour, children could get to work only at 10 years of age, and soon after, only people up to 18 could get employed.

By 1929, new laws were introduced to turn workhouses into hospitals and in 1930, workhouses were officially closed.

A Christmas Carol

Dickens's most famous book is "A CHRISTMAS CAROL".

As you can tell by the name, it's a Christmas story, that talks about family, happyness and kindness.

The main character is Ebenezer Scrooge, a very bad man, that was rude to everyone and hated Christmas.

On Christmas eve's night, Scrooge got a visit by the ghost of his dead business partner Jacob Marey.

He told Scrooge that he'll get a visit from3 spirits: the past Christmas one, the present Christmas one and the future Chistmas one. This will change his life forever!

Oliver Twist

Oliver twist is a novel that talks about the adventures of an orphan to show people how hard the life of an orphan was and how bad work houses were.

In the story, Oliver lives his life as a poor young child in 1830.

He had a master, that chose what he could or couldn't do, a very common thing for orphans in that time. He met lot of evil characters in his journey to find happiness in his life. They even tried to change him in a thief.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

Dickens also got his own movie, "THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS".

It tells the story of Dickens's life and how he wrote A Christmas Carol.

It's an awsome movie with a tone of comedy, where Dickens has visions of the characters in his story coming to life and talking with him.
