Reflection on Freire Quote

I agree with this quote that there is no such thing as a neutral education process. Often, the education process plays a large role in which we assimilate and conform to mainstream society. Students are taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and other skills rigidly and with limited (and bias) content. School structure often times leads to little room for exploration. Students often times do not have much choice in class policies, structure or content. Unfortunately, a great deal of the content that is taught is Anglo-centric. In a non-Anglo setting, students are likely to feel disconnected from the material and structure of the school. Without options and exploration offered in the educational process, students will not have the opportunity to deal critically and creatively with reality and participate in the transformations of their world. Learning is not supposed to be a chore or daunting, it is supposed to be enjoyable. The first portion of the quote refers to extrinsic motivation, while the second part refers to intrinsic motivation; as educators, our goal should be to intrinsically motivate our students.

An analogy I like to share with my students is that they are plants and my job as a teacher is to water them and allow them to grow. It is important, as a teacher, to see myself as a collaborator with my students. My job is not to tell my students how/what to think, feel, and enjoy. My job is to facilitate learning in a safe, respectful environment. Mutual respect is important in my classroom. Students have the right to form their own opinions and stances; I am there to guide them on their journey. Not only am I a teacher, but I am a learner, as well. I am open-minded and learn so much from my students! We engage in learning as a mutual process.
