DO NOW Padlet: Summarizing & Genre by Dario Sulzman

Today, you will have to compose a summary of the text you're analyzing. But some of you will need to summarize entire movies, while others will need to summarize TV advertisements, articles or excerpts from a speech. Obviously, all good summaries share certain qualities: they're relatively brief and should flow smoothly--like a quick retelling of a story. But your choice of genre will also require you to approach your summary in more specific ways. Pick two of these genres. What differences do you think you will need to consider when summarizing each one?

Between a movie and an article, I think a difference is with a movie we can clearly see what is happening with the actors movements, and camera angles but with an article we have to read and imagine what is happening through the authors words. So that difference would make summarizing a movie a little easier because we have specific scenes and tones that makes it easy to remember.

The text I am analyzing is about the news covering the employment rate and hours. I will critically analyze the idea of hours and what the company is contributing when it comes to there employees. The whole idea of being kind to give your own hours to other employees. Because the company isn’t able to provide those hours. The genre I would be comparing is Rodger and me- movie and my article. And how it ties in with the relationship with employers and employees.

I think i am going to have to be precise with my summary because I am summarizing a whole movie I will need to condense it with out leaving out important scenes and ideas. Compared to an article that is shorter and is easier to summarize without leaving important phrases and ideas compared to an hour long movie.

I am analyzing a film called sorry to bother you and I think its easier to analyze because it shows you what they mean then telling you. To analyze my film I would need to analyze that parts of how the Union in the workforces protested and how it formed. If it was a text I feel not would be harder to analyze it because its better for adds, text, films to show you what they mean.

while summarizing both an article and a movie you have to find the key moments/points in each, for a movie you have to focus on the visual elements (setting, character appearances), the character(s) development, pacing (key plot points, timing), and the underlying message of the movie. Rather than focusing on the tone (formal, informal, persuasive), evidence, the purpose of the text, and the key points and how they connect to the overall topic like in a summary for an article.

I chose a movie as the genre to summarize for my essay and compared to like a piece of a speech, a movie is way longer and has constant events/turning points while a piece of a text gets straight to the point of what your talking about so summarizing is somewhat easier compared to summarizing a whole movie. Like an advertisement and an hour long movie have to be summarized differently due to their length and the information thats given are used more with persuasion in an advertisement compared to a movie that is usually aimed at sending a message while also getting the audience to feel something.

When summarizing the movie Parasite, the length of the movie is important to consider because everything can't be include and must keep it brief with only including the key points. Also, the different approach the movie makes toward the topic of inequality in our society. The way the movie approaches the audience emotionally and through visuals.

When summarizing the tv advertisement, it's important to consider how in a short span of time the ad approaches their targeted audience.

Movies are different from articles because of not only how long it is, but there is a story that is thought out and in consideration, fiction or real. Most likely, parts appealing to emotions will appear more in movies than in articles, which is an aspect to focus on more in movies. You would also have to pick up on both the plot and message of the movie. Compared to an article, movies have more visuals, body language, etc. An article is giving the author's message/opinion through their words. There are less things in consideration when it comes to summarizing them.
