This norm is very important because if someone is offended, collaboration can go downhill fast. I think it is always best (even more so when the communication is written) that we presume a positive intention. If needed, respectfully asking for clarification can also clear up miscommunication.

(Janeth)

Making sure that you are doing your part to further the progress of staff and students is an important Norm to consider, even if the ideas seemed far-fetched. Often, as a group, ideas can be taken from outrageous to achievable! The reverse happens as well. An idea that may seem lack luster can be developed into something really great when you work as a collaboration of minds. Connecting this to Mindy's thoughts on two (or more) heads being better than one.
Marilyn

I think that paraphrasing is a valuable norm when one is collaborating in a group setting. It's important because you are checking in with one another to ensure that you are following their argument which shows you have respect for their opinions. It's important because your group will make decisions accordingly and act on these ideas. It's also important because you are showing empathy by putting yourself in another person's shoes and building stronger connections. One of the paraphrasing starters I use is "I liked what you said about....tell me more."
(Rosanna)

I love the idea of building an environment where inquiry is the goal. As co-learners on this journey, we will have many questions. But we are also resources to each other. So we've got to ask questions of each other to promote a rich discussion and to dive deeper into topics. -Tiffany

I like Janeth's idea of presuming positive intent. It is difficult to appreciate tone in an online environment. As professionals, we should presume that our exchanges are 100% positive, even if they can be interpreted differently.

Probing for more information leads to better understanding. Seeking to understand is important because it curbs judgement and miscommunication. Sometimes, we disagree with an idea because we do not understand it and therefore acknowledge it as irrelevant. A deeper understanding can also lead to more productivity, embracing an idea initially thought to be absurd and valuing the ideas of others. Probing shows interest and respect for other people's perspectives.
~Julie

As she mentioned in her post, at times it can be difficult to understand someone's intentions or thought process through written communication. As such, before jumping to conclusions, I think it is important to take a moment to pause and ask for clarification, further details, and/or an example to help clarify your understanding.

- Lauren
