His achievement was an innovation in language that largely replaced the older terms “American character” and “American principles” with a forward-looking phrase that implied modesty about current success in giving respect and equal opportunity to all people. The American dream was a trajectory to a promising future, a model for the United States and for the whole world."

The American Dream is supposed to represent the character and principles to live by. People often think that the American Dream is about attaining material items, but it is really about gaining characteristics to help an individual maintain their lifestyle and live it to the fullest.

I believe that you have to work hard for what you want and even when you achieve your goals, you have to make new ones and keep improving. I want to gain the material items that "defines" the American Dream but I also want to gain the characteristics that will help me maintain the Dream. I feel that people get too caught up in trying to buy everything that defines the dream, but once they achieve it they don't know what to do with their lives after that point. My grandmother and grandfather lived lives that were extremely close to what people feel the American Dream is,. They owned a house, got jobs , had children, and lived a very full life. My mothers parents on the other hand lived a very poor but happy life. They did have a house and jobs, but it never was enough. To them, they did live a full life though because they got to have children and watched them grow up and become successful people. My mother coming to America to create a whole new life for herself is the embodiment of the characteristics of the American dream. She left everything behind and risked it all to come to the USA, not knowing what she was going to get herself into.
