Why did the French give us the statue? YES
They wanted to honor the Declaration of Independence and the colonies' fight for freedom. (EP)

The wanted to honor the freedom for the United States. They were saying congratulations. (SW)

They wanted to say good job America for fighting for freedom. (AS)

Why did the outside of the statute change color over time? What is that called?
If copper stays outside for too long it can turn green, and it's called oxidation. (HF)
Because if copper stays outside for too long it turns green or blue called oxidation (AS). Yes, that is so interesting.

Where was the statue first built? Why did they have to take her apart?
She was built in France. She was too big to go in one piece, so they packed her in 214 boxes. (HF)

Why was the pedestal needed for the statue?

The statue needed a sturdy base. (EP)
Without the pedestal, the statue would just fall over. The pedestal would keep a strong base. (SW). Everything needs a strong base!!

*What is some information in this book that was the same as in our story: Lily and Miss Liberty?
Mr. Pulitzer was a real person. He actually helped with raising money for the pedestal. (HF)

Both said that the statue was a gift from France and the statue came on a boat packed in crates. (EP)
The French people gave the statue as a gift and the people of America payed for the pedestal. (AS)
That a lot of people came to see the statue of liberty when she was completed. And Mr. Pulitzer is the same newspaper guy who helped raise money for the pedestal. (SW)
YES: I think that's what I love about historical fiction. We can learn so much, but still enjoy a good story.

From 1892-1954 many immigrants came to the United States and they all were welcomed by the Statue of Liberty when they arrived by boat through New York Harbor.
*Do you know anyone in your family who was an immigrant and came to the U.S. from another country? Ask your mom and dad. If yes, where did they come from.

EX: Mrs. Held's Grandma: Lorene Hauge came to the US from Norway.
My mom's great-great-grandparents came from Ireland. (HF)

My great-great grandparents came from Poland. (EP)
My great-great grandparents came from Sweden (AS)
My Uncle (Tio Bryan), who is also my 🤬-Father, came to the US from Mexico. I went to the ceremony where Tio became a US citizen. It was last year. (SW)
My great-great grandparents went through Ellis Island from Poland and Germany. (SW)
This is wonderful to read about all the places your families are from.
*The Statue of Liberty" is a symbol of freedom? A symbol is a object that stands for an idea. The statue is the object and it stands for the idea “freedom”. Why? We are free from the British because we (the Colonies) defeated them in the Revolutionary War.
