Postcolonialism is a social science that studies the lasting effects and impacts of colonialism, or one nation’s subjugation over another. Taking into account both colonization committed by European and non-European societies, postcolonialism explores narratives from the marginalized and often centers around themes of cultural exploration and identity.

When I think of postcolonialism, I consider the lasting impact of colonization and how it constructs current cultural conditions. It maintains a focus on nonwhite indigenous peoples but could also include, at times, the voices of white settler cultures. Postcolonialism explores anticolonial resistance as well as simply life after colonization, including experiences with double consciousness, mimicry, and other facets of one's cultural identity.

Tyson, Lois. Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide. 3rd ed., Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, Ny, Routledge, 2015.
