At Ceciles funeral, Joss uncle asks him what killed cecile. Joss wasn't sure but he started to remember the killer and told his uncle it was a vampire. His uncle recruites him as a Slayer from a society that hunts vampires to avenge his sister.

3 year time skip. Joss is now 13 when his uncle sends a letter to request him to go begin his training. Joss was confused because his uncle had told him he had to wait till he was 18. He takes the train to his uncles "campsite"

When Joss got off the train he followed the crowd out the station to look for his uncle. While in line a saw a girl running from a suspicious man and out of insticnct he tripped the man. He found out the man was a vampire and the girl was the daughter of his uncles friend who was picking him up from the station(Sirus)

Sirus takes him to the "cabin" they are staying in. When he meets his uncle he finds out that he is very strict and heartless. His uncle(Abraham) reveal why he was chosen to be trained and the result had Joss devistated that it wasn't because of his skills. His uncle wants Joss to start his training right away.

That same night Joss hikes the mountain to set up camp with a guy who's also staying in the cabin(Myiek). They stay their camping, talking about his future in the slayer society. Joss wasn't allowed to sleep or eat for 3 days while in the mountains for his "purification" the next night Joss wasn't able to stay awake and when he awoke he found Myleks body dismembered.

After Myleks death Abraham had to finish his purification by whipping him in the back 20 times. The next day Joss's body felt horrible. He didn't wanna show any signs of weakness so he decided to patch himself. When Sirus saw him like this he told him what Abraham did wasn't right. Abraham's daughter started to question Joss what had happened but Joss had to lie to her saying it was a mountain lion because she wasn't allowed to know anything about the slayer society

Sirus invites him to go shopping with him and his daughter. Joss says that he'll go. Joss had finished his shopping list that Sirus gave him early and was waiting outside beside the truck. He looks to his side seeing a familiar face. The same person who chased Sirus's daughter. He followed him into the woods thinking of killing him for respect from Abraham. When he found the vampire it seemed like he was waiting for him. The vampire intruduced himself and gave Joss a message to relay to his uncle and if they didn't obey he would rip them to peices.

Abraham teaches Joss hand to hand combat. After multiple brutal punches from Abraham, Joss was able to land a hit on his uncle. His uncle stopped his training and said he passed this lesson. Joss could feel a hint of respect from his uncle. The next day his uncle beat him for 1 day straight to teach him how to accept pain as another lesson. After his lesson, Sirus's daughter Kate saw him in a beat up from questioning what happened but Joss still wasn't able to tell her. Kate continues to worry about him.

After resting himself up, Joss decided to hike up his mountain in search for his uncle. He saw a dim light and followed it. It took him to a campfire where all the other slayers and Abraham where minus Sirus. He was about to leave when he heard a subject that caught his ear. They were talking about Myleks death. They were saying that they think there was a mole in their ranks. The slayer that was closest to Mylek(Ash) Accused Joss. Which was surprising to Joss since he was so young but what surprised him the most was that Abraham agreed to this accusation. He told the rest of the slayers to watch him closely.

In the morning, Joss walked down the stairs to see where Sirus was. He read a note that said he was in town getting emergency groceries and that Abraham said to run 10 laps on the track. Joss gets ready to go on the track after eat a bowl of cereal and taking a pack of water bottles with him.
