Housewives and business owners, joined forces in order to enforce complete abstinence. Housewives wanted temperance because there was an increase in domestic violence due to alcohol. 
Business owners wanted temperance because they didn't want their employees drunk during their work hours. The temperance movement was successful and Maine was the first state to ban alcohol in the 1850's and soon, other states followed. The protests started in the late 1700's. The places that workers worked in were poor.
Workers also worked 10 hour days and didn't get paid much. Child labor also became a problem during this time.
