"He knew the monster was something different, something ancient, but Conor didn't know what. And he didn't care. This wasn't the anything Conor had been expecting. He had been expecting something else. Something specific."

“It was like standing at the end of the world, almost like being alive and awake in his nightmare, the screaming and emptiness-” After Connor had destroyed his grandmother’s living room in Chapter 17. The use of the simile “ It was like standing at the end of the world” is to display isolation and fear that’s in Connor that was never shown or spoken, almost like the void of Loneliness stands in front of him. The use of the simile “Almost like being alive in his own nightmare” suggests that his grandma’s grieving sounds painful to the point where it’s frightening. Nearly like watching his family fall apart through his grandma’s suffering. The choice to employ Oxymoron “screaming” and “emptiness” Indicates confusion and the different emotions throughout the stages of grief. -Celine
