Programmes like mid-term camps ensure that learners from low socio-economic backgrounds get a fair and equal opportunity to succeed and achieve within the education system like their peers from other economic statuses. In other words, initiatives such as the DEIS (2005) programme have helped to bridge the gap between social disadvantage and access to education at primary and post-primary levels. One of the primary motivating factors for the introduction of this strategy ‘is the fact that the rates of educational under-achievement and early school leaving remain much higher for students from disadvantaged communities than for other children’. (O'Mahony, 2020).
