Nelson develops this argument by giving an in depth description of what the time era was and setting the stage for the intended audience then Nelson used the firsthand experiences of ex-black panther members, then showing the firsthand experiences of the police and FBI agents and finally shows many clips from the time of the Black Panthers to really depict what that time was like for the African Americans. Nelson's purpose is to exploit the extreme oppression of the people of color during 1950s-1970s in order to show the effectiveness of the Black Panther Party and the impact they had on their society in that time, but also the impact they had on modern society. He provides support for this claim but first illustrating an average African American family, then he places the family in the middle of the painting in order to show the importance of the family, then he paints each member of the family looking in different directions; the father looking towards the future or towards what is to come, the mother looking toward the back toward where the family traveled from and the hardships they went through, while the child is focused on the present and looking to the ground to illustrate that he is focusing on where they are now and finally using plain colors to really highlight the family and to set the mood the use of dark colors depict a gloomy tone. Johnson's purpose for painting this work of art is to describe the emotions of African Americans and also to highlight the hardships that one goes through to escape to a better life in order to show the effects the Civil War had on people.
