Graph 1 shows the demand for eating out/fast food for those that prioritize their health and saving money. The demand for eating out decreases for those that prioritize health and cautious financial habits because consistently cooking at home allows a consumer to have more control over what types of food they eat as well as how much they spend on food. Although groceries may cost more initially than one meal eating out, consumers can meal prep and have leftovers that can help reduce the amount of money overall that is spent on food.

Graph two depicts the demand for consumers that prioritize time more than health and/or saving money. Eating out can be a quick and enjoyable experience for those that feel they don's have the time, or don't want to spend the time, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning for every meal. For many people, spending a large sum of money on groceries seems more daunting and less financially responsible than buying a cheaper fast food meal. This increases the demand for eating out/fast food.

Current Situation: Fast Food Inflation

Fast food restaurants were considered the cheaper and faster alternative to cooking at home. Over the past decade, inflation has raised the prices of fast-food restaurants by almost 60% despite actual inflation being only 31%. McDonald's, America's primary fast food source, faced the most significant price increase compared to other major fast-food chains. In 2014, the price of a McChicken was $1, but a decade later, the cost of the sandwich is now $3. That is a 200% increase in price. In addition to this, fast-food companies have used tactics to deal with the rising costs of food.

Shrinkflation: which reduces the amount of food while increasing the costs. This has made eating out more costly for consumers.

Healthy Options: Due to the pandemic, people have become more aware of their health and started to demand healthier options. Fast food companies started to provide more options, which came with an upcharge

Changing Dollar Menus: Many chains have started to remove the dollar menu due to the rising inflation, this meant that they had to make changes to make it seem as if their food is still affordable. For example, McDonald's has changed their $1 menu name to the $1 $2 $3 Menu.

This has made eating out more costly for consumers.

As prices of fast food continue to increase, people have started to look for cheaper alternatives for food. This meant buying in bulk. Costco has become one of the most successful retailers in the past decade. Costco has allowed people to buy food in larger quantities at a low price, encouraging cooking at home. To maintain such low prices, Costco uses several methods:

Membership Card: The membership card fees contribute to the operating costs, allowing them to have such low prices for their goods.

Food Court Prices: The food court offers a variety of food in larger sizes and lower prices compared to fast food chains. For example, the Costco Hot Dog has remained the same price of $1.50 since it was introduced in 1984.

Generic Brand Options: Costco offers Kirkland Signature, their generic brand that is priced lower than the name brand alternatives.

These methods have contributed to their customer loyalty, making them a top retailer.

The reliance on fast food chains in lower-income neighborhoods has led to poor health and diet. These areas may have limited access to nutritional information, which may result in poor diet decisions. Fast food marketing companies target these neighborhoods by giving false information about the health and quality of their food. By highlighting the convenience and pricing, these companies make it seem as though their food compares to cooking at home. This can increase obesity and other food-related health problems in lower-income households.

Cooking at home is more economical since you can have more food at a lower cost. There is usually an upcharge when eating out. For example, the private grocery store steak can increase by 300% at a restaurant. Inflation at fast food locations has increased by 60% in the last decade, making it more expensive to eat out.

Health:

Meals cooked at home are almost always healthier than eating out at fast food restaurants. When cooking, you are aware of all the ingredients and have control over what you are putting on your plate. There are hidden ingredients such as preservatives and additives found in restaurant foods that can contain extra sodium, sugar, and fats that can affect your health. Relying on fast food can lead to health issues, especially in lower-income neighborhoods, where there isn't enough easy access to supermarkets.
