How would you describe your musical identity? How does your identity relate to your specific cultural cohorts and sense of self?

Growing up in a musical family, it was expected of me to play an instrument when I got to the age where band would be offered. By singing in harmonies around me when I was younger, they attempted to train my ear to make sure that I would be able to sing on-key at all times and tell when a note was sharp or flat. My want for membership into my family’s community drove me to do what they did by joining band, taking music lessons, participating in music festivals, and competing for scholarships. Of course, by loving playing and being a part of music, I greatly enjoyed doing these activities and didn’t mind the pressure to engage in them. I see myself as a participator because I love to get involved with music- whether it’s being in a musical group, practicing by myself, or even just singing along to my favorite songs. My musical identity is also defined by what I listen to. I feel like the broad range of styles and genres I listen to equates to how open-minded I feel myself to be. I also listen to certain genres or songs depending on my mood at the time. The music I listen to is also greatly influenced by the cultural cohorts I am a part of. I often listen to the same popular music as people my age, but I also listen to other types of music from being a part of other cultural cohorts. For example, my brother and other “band people” that I spend time around listen to band and classical music, and I have adopted those as well as a result of that.

The Jupiter Carnegie flute pictured below is the exact model flute that I own. This flute was a gift from my parents when I started practicing a lot more and it got me more excited about the music I was making. The upgrade was a big step in my musical career and I’ve done a lot with that Jupiter since I’ve gotten it. The band With Confidence that I’m with in the photo was during the Vans Warped Tour. One of the cultural cohorts I used to be a part of was the community of people who listened to that type of music and loved going to their live shows. The music of this group and others on the tour was a big part of my growing up and that community was really important to me, especially now that Warped Tour is going on its last leg this coming summer.

Winning the District Scholarship was something I didn't think I could do years before, but with a lot of practice and hard work, I was able to accomplish it. It was an extremely nerve-wracking experience and I had to play in front of about 500 people, which is more than I had ever played in front of. I had difficulties sleeping and eating beforehand and had a nervous breakdown a few hours before the performance (largely, I think, because it was a solo flute piece, so I didn't have an accompanist to perform with me), but it was ultimately a good experience and was a great way for me to get out of my comfort zone. I included the video of All Time Low's Remembering Sunday because they were my favorite band growing up and I looked up to them, bought all their music, and tried to see as many concerts as I could to support them.
