A classroom activity that would engage students in computational thinking is providing groups of students with written scenarios that each pose a different problem. Their task is to choose one of three digital tools/pieces of technology offered to them and create a solution with that tool. For example they could have the option of a tablet, a robot, or a camera, and from there, the groups of students must work together to create a solution AND explain it in either writing or video.

I think something that engages students in computational thinking that is very simple is the assignment where you give students a piece of paper that has a certain mark on it. The mark can imply a certain shape like if it were a circle you might assume it would be a sun, but the key is students cannot use that shape to draw whatever the obvious answer is, they must be creative and find a way to incorporate this mark into their own, unique picture.

We used the Dash and Dot robot. I think its a very good tool because you can adapt it to different age groups. You can have him do more advanced things but you can also focus on just having him drive around the room. It helps teach students more about commands, directions, how to adapt if you program him one way and he goes the other way, and more.
