While we were in Wales over the summer, we saw a dog running very happily in a field. Then we saw the owners, who were NOT happy. We stood and watched for a couple of minutes before I decided to join the chase, followed shortly by the rest of our group. Half an hour later, we successfully corralled the pup back to its family!

I recently volunteered at a fundraising event for Friedreich's ataxia. FA is a degenerative and life-shortening neurological disorder that causes degenerative loss of muscle, speech, and nervous system function, and currently there is no cure. This cause is very close to my heart as it has had an immense impact on my loved ones. <3

I helped collect and am donating over 150 pair of brand new pajama's, socks, slippers and robes to a battered women's shelter. I will be giving two totes full of all of these items to the shelter this week for them to have for their "Free" Christmas shop for the kiddos to shop for their mommies next week :-).

My brother recently learned to crochet (which brings me SO much joy.) I realized he was only using one hook because he liked the style of hook, but didn't have an ergonomic handle. I went to the store and got him my personal favorite set of crochet hooks that are ergonomic but also have the tips he prefers. And with 5 sizes so he can make different things. It wasn't for Christmas, just as a "just because" gift. :)

My grandfather taught me when I was younger to make a habit out of picking up trash when I see it. Now as an adult, it feels impossible to walk by a piece of rogue trash without stopping to pick it up and dispose of it properly. When I walk on a nearby beach, I bring along a bag to pick up trash and help make it a cleaner place :)

We went through my daughter's room and any books or toys she has outgrown or no longer uses we plan to offer to our local library and Goodwill. I read something recently that said most people do this after the holidays when they get all the new toys but people looking for gifts at Goodwill need them BEFORE the holidays so the timing can make a difference.

My wife and I stumbled on stray dogs in Puerto Rico, where my wife is from. They were in bad shape. We were able to take one home with us and are rehabilitating her at the moment and trying to find her a home. She's missing an eye and a foot, and has a mangled rear leg. It has been an experience seeing her get healthier each day and teaching her to not gorge herself every time she eats.

I volunteer some time at our local humane society specifically with helping severely traumatized animals get integrated back into a normal life. This month, it looks like I'll be spending some time with a dog and a cat that were caught up in a barn fire set by their owner looking for an insurance claim. Thankfully, they weren't hurt too badly but they're both very skittish around older men so its time to get to work and get them adopted!

Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my family gets together to make Candy houses. It's been a wonderful tradition to kick off the holiday season. This year was extra special with two new babies in attendance! We create festive goody bags with all of the candy for the food pantry my parents volunteer at. They'll be given out to local families in the area for an extra holiday treat.

When I moved into my apartment complex David, an elderly gentleman, moved in around the same time. He is blind and for the first few weeks he had a team of people that were helping him learn where things are, such as the outside laundry machine and the trash disposal. My office desk faces the windows that see out into the parking lot and I tend to keep an eye out when he is outside to make sure he gets to where he needs to go. He is still adjusting to the new layout and I am glad I work from home and can be there to help him when he needs it. The other day he got a little turned around from the laundry (the weight of the basket that he carries with his white cane can throw off his navigation) and I went down to assist him in getting back to his place.

I'm part of a "buy nothing" Facebook group for my neighborhood. While downsizing items from my house in preparation for a move, I've been offering nicer items for free to neighbors instead of selling them on Facebook marketplace or elsewhere! I love giving items away to others who can use them—and it's especially fun knowing they're going to someone else in the neighborhood.

A local organization encourages "big tip energy" at the holidays - to really have a direct impact on one person by leaving a large specific tip when dining out. At brunch last week, our server shared with me that she was in the midst of finals week as a nursing student and how hard it was but she knows that it will all be worth it, and I knew she'd be getting a big tip to reward her hard work. I left a large cash tip and a note in with the normal credit card slip when I paid so she'd have a little something to treat herself or help with school bills this holiday season.

I'm planning a surprise visit to my mother-in-law this weekend who I haven't seen in 5 years. She's 81 and lives in Stockholm and the pandemic plus her inability to fly has kept us apart for too long. I only have time for an overnight visit, but I schemed with my father-in-law to show up Friday evening, pretend I'm a 'flower delivery person', buzz their apartment, and he'll let me in to surprise her. Can't wait to see her face and give her a warm hug in person!

I have started volunteer coaching a couple days a week at the local high school. When I was younger I was fortunate to have coaches give their time and energy towards my development, which allowed me to wrestle in college, get an education, and build a work ethic that I've carried throughout my life. Providing the same support to the team has been very rewarding and I feel more involved making a positive impact on our small community.

My husband and I recently witnessed a motorcyclist get hit by a large SUV. We stopped to cater to their needs while calling for emergency assistance and waiting until they arrived. Those situations really put life into perspective and help you remember that giving your time and dollars are both incredibly impactful.

A fellow mom from my sons' school is an emergency room nurse and revealed that many adults come to the ER for care and do not have the necessary cold weather clothing and are often discharged as they came in. She asked for donations of cold weather clothes and blankets. I dropped a bagload off yesterday during dropoff!

I donated a bunch of gently used toys, crafts, and clothing I had growing up to Salvation Army. It is nice to know children during this holiday season can benefit and enjoy things I have loved in my life/childhood, especially if funds are, unfortunately, tight. I think it's important to remember that a "loss" or giving away is actually such a generous act because it helps brighten someone's day or helps another human.

After digging into a problem with a customer, we located a "lost document" for SCORM specs! And by "lost document" I mean this person downloaded the PDF a while ago, and it no longer exists on the internet. I'll be adding this "lost document" to the lms.technology archive website so that moving forward the entire public will be more informed on how SCORM 1.2 specs work! Less confusion for all! \^^/ In case you're curious, lms.technology is the website I maintain-It's aim is to make browsing eLearning specs easier and more straightforward for everyone!

A friend of mine recently bought a house and is starting from scratch to furnish it, all while working with a tight budget. Coincidentally, we were selling our house around the same time. Instead of listing some of our items on Facebook as planned, we decided to gift them to her to help her get a head start on creating her new home. She was incredibly grateful, and it felt amazing to support her in this exciting new chapter!

One of my best friends is struggling with the loss of a child and her mental health. She has recently entered an in-patient facility to get help. She was there, out of state and away from her kids and family for Thanksgiving. I have been sending her mail and sent her a journal to arrive on Thanksgiving with a quote to remind her of her own strength. I hope this helps her know how loved and supported she is and that she can do this.

I recently built a new house and when moving out of my old house I decided to donate all of my (perfectly good condition) living room and bedroom furniture and housewares to a young single mother of 4 children under 6 years old. We met by accident in a Facebook forum for a yard sale, and after chatting with her for several days and getting to know each other, I discovered that she needed what I was trying to sell - but she did not have the money to pay for the items. I also learned through discussions and shared photos that two of her children had been sleeping on the floor of her one bedroom apartment. I helped her coordinate a U-Haul truck and I gave her everything we could fit into it. I personally lifted all the items into the truck for her while she went "shopping" in my closet full of items I was planning to sell online. We had a lot of fun that day, and I could tell she was not expecting anyone to help her with anything - ever. She tried to give me some money but I refused to take it. I will always remember the impact I made on her and her family -- it was beyond worth the money I would have made selling my old furniture and houseware items and clothing. I am so happy I was able to help her make a safe and comfortable home for her family! We've been keeping in touch, and I check on her regularly to see if she needs anything. I will be bringing her some food around Christmas time :)

My new neighbor was out of town for 3 weeks and our leaf pick up was during that time. So to help her out, I raked her front yard for her so that they could be picked up because I knew she would have wanted it done if she were home.

I joined a group of friends in my neighborhood to sponsor an opening night showing of Wicked. We went together to buy out an entire screen at the local theater and then did our best to fill it up by inviting all the friends and neighbors to join us and watch it together as a group. (side note: I went in with low expectations, but was happily surprised at how good it was)

Went to Whole Foods and grabbed the last loaf of sour dough bread. When I turned around there was a lady who was also looking for sour dough. I ended up giving my loaf to her. She was so happy because it was her husbands favorite and he wasn't feeling well so she wanted to bring him something he would enjoy.

In line at Goodwill, there was a family with two young children behind me. The kids were getting bored from waiting in line so an associate at Goodwill went to grab them some stuffed animals to keep them occupied. They loved these little toys! When it was finally time for me to pay, I figured it could potentially be difficult to put the stuffed animals back, so I asked the parents if they’d like to have them and that it would be my treat. They said yes, so we purchased the two stuffed animals for each child and quickly walked them back to the family.

I recently spent some extra time and research in selecting the food we donated at my daughter's school. From past volunteer experience, I've seen that those who generously donate food for Thanksgiving meals get the basics - like cans of vegetables, jars of gravy, etc.- but they forget about the extras that make food tasty, like herbs and spices, oil, and baking ingredients. I took more time to think through what extras would make the holidays a little more special for those who need them.

Recently, my partner and I went to a small restaurant (eatery). Before eating, a boy near us was begging for change. I asked him if he wanted to eat, but he said he had already eaten. I asked my partner to give him some change and told the boy to make sure to use it for water or food, and not for anything bad.
