Today, we will be learning about DNA and creating DNA strands out of beads from four living things. To help us understand exactly how DNA helps identify people, I have found this video that will tell us a bit more about DNA. I won't play the whole video, but as your watching, keep the following questions in mind: 

a. what traits come from DNA?
b. how does DNA help catch criminals?

How does it connect with forensics?  Have you ever walked into a room and something just did not feel right.  You look are and notice some odd details that just does not fit. Like why is there a cup of coffee that has not been drunk or why is the air conditioning  on in the middle of winter? These things are called clues. Does anyone want to tell me what a  "clue" is.

We are going to do an activity just like I spy but with a forensic twist. It's fast past so you must pay attention. (Students share details) I wrote down all the details we observed, creating a list of clues for this image. The steps that we took are similar to the ones taken by a "forensic scientist". Imagine this; You're the number 1 detective in the giant city of Magnolia. There has just been a beak in at a local bank and you have to find specific clues to track down the criminal. 

Once you enter the room the place is a mess! Tables are flipped, glass is broken, trash and debris are everywhere. As the number 1 detective you're supposed to narrow down what items in this mess are useful for your case and what's just trash. This is key in any investigation and it could even be useful in everyday things. Being aware of all your surroundings and at the same time being able to highlight specific things is something that could take years to train OR it could just be something you're naturally good at. Ready to find out if you're a natural detective?

Detectives use details all the time in order to find criminals Today we are going to be detectives while we play 'I Spy'.
