It's essentially the belief that man has beauty, worth and dignity. Toward the beginning of the 14th century, the Renaissance started. Because the church started to lose power, and people thought less about God, people started to think about themselves and the beauty of themselves. People became more globally-focused and they started to think about the world. The church's power declined because of money started to go into trade and individual merchants. People also started to think about human progress and innovation, and they questioned how humans work. Feudal society also broke down, which led to self-respect among everyone. Difference was also preached during the Renaissance: "Sameness is the mother of disgust. Variety is the cure!"  
Humanism = Focus on humans.
Secularism = The idea that politics should be discussed without religious influences.
Individualism = The importance of self and how the individual can "shine" in society.
