Students might focus on the ways in which texts explore the relationship between humans and the environment and the implications of technology and media for society. They might also consider the idea of scientific development and progress.

"Flowers" by Alice Walker relates to the topic because of the great detail the author writes in. When Myop sees a dead man the author describes him as ,'a tall man...broken fingers" This is incredibly descriptive. It shows the great creativity that goes into the text.

Alice Walker presented the Environment throughout the short story “The Flowers” and explores how it affects one’s passion. “her family's sharecropper cabin.” With this being stated in the text it informs the readers of the period Mypo is living in. Around Civil War times, sharecroppers were fairly common. This prepares the audience for what is to come. Myop being as innocent as she is and being surrounded by, “blue flowers” and “pretty ferns and leaves,” then transitioning into an environment that is “gloomy “initiates a scene change into finding a deceased man which completely changings the mood. When Myop laid her flowers “And the summer was over” this is relevant to the change in seasons and feelings associated with each season. Fall is connected with merely negative emotions and because of what Myop has stumbled upon her passion has changed “And the summer was over.”

The environment in which Myop's lives in is used in connection with the current technology. Myop and her family are sharecroppers who seem to explore the woods offend. While collecting flowers she stumbles upon the corpse of a black man. She notices the man's broken teeth and the tattered clothes, mostly likely caused from a beating. The man has a noose around his neck which infers that he was lynched. From the writing of the story, Myop doesn't seem to surprised by this scene. She is a black girl living in a time where is type of violence is seen on a regular, but a scene like this has never been so close to home for her. Since she can't properly express her feeling, she lays the flowers she picked and returns home without her innocence.

In the story, Myop’s environment consists of what appears to be an average plot of land which her parents are sharecroppers on. She ventures throughout the land, collecting flowers as she bounds from place to place, but as she finds herself entering the land’s forest, she comes across a corpse.

It’s a black man, obviously brutalized and beaten before he was hanged. The noose was something simple which was used to kill negros, but it was no novel idea, as it had been used for centuries at that point.

Her environment is one that she, as a black female, is no longer safe in, as the brutalization of her people and their murder has been made a very harsh reality to her, as she loses her innocence upon seeing the corpse.

The short story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker can be seen through the lense of how her environment impacted her throughout the story. In the second paragraph, she talked about “rusty boards of her family’s sharecropper cabin.” From this quote we noticed that her parents were sharecroppers and she lived on a sharecropping farm. This tells us more about her environment and we could also make the inference that this is after the Civil War. She also
discovered a noose and a dead body at the climax of the story and that was when her innocence was stripped from her. We see that at the beginning of the story she was picking flowers and playing in the yard and now at the ending she sees a dead body. The environment around her changed her mindset at a very young age and she was greatly impacted by it.

Myop’s environment changes her perspective on how life is for her and people of her skin color. Myop’s environment consists of family who have to rely on sharecropping to make a living and the torture and killing of a man. Myop is an innocent, and care free girl who ends up having to interact with something so dark and disturbing. The wording, “ and the summer was over.” Is not just a metaphor relating to Myop’s innocence but, also to her ignorance about the world around her. Which is how her perspective changes from the beginning of the story to the end.
