If there are any, you could share these with Joe so he has some options as soon as he is laid off so he can still support his family.

Avoid telling him from who and where you heard this. If Joe pushes for details, tell him you weren’t supposed to hear it and it came from someone credible and that the only reason you won’t tell him more, is out of fear of losing your own job. Offer to support Joe in finding a new job and whatever his family might need. Be sure to emphasize that you don’t know the specifics, but you do know the company’s intentions. Hopefully Joe will listen, but if he doesn’t, there isn’t much more you can do.

This is so that he can prepare for his fire, giving him time to start looking for a new one to support his family. This can also motivate him to work harder to have a chance of not being fired. Not telling Joe and seeing him get fired may leave you with a feeling of guilt for not telling him.
