In 1973, President Nixon ended the draft in the Vietnam War, moving the United States Military to an all-volunteer force. People did not like the draft at the time and by ending the draft, people saw it as a guarantee of their own rights and a direction towards change away from the strife of the Vietnam War, which caused people to like Nixon a little bit.
Vaishnavi - Because the end of the draft followed public protests, demonstrating the people's power over the government's decisions, drafting people without their consent will be highly unlikely.
Natasha - impact on me today: if we had another war, I wouldn't be forced to enlist. Instead, I would be able to pursue my interest and go to college or an education and start my life, and I would be avoiding the traumatizing experience that is war and avoid developing a mental issue

Nixon founded the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 as a response to the rising concern over conservation and pollution. The agency oversaw the passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Mammal Marine Protection Act. This policy did a lot of work for protecting the environment following the uptick in the movement when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring. The EPA oversees energy conservation, environmental stewardship, sustainable growth, air and water quality, and pollution reduction initiatives, all of which lead to a healthier planet. There are a lot of environmental issues today and with this branch of government, people as well as the planet are kept somewhat protected by an important example that gives an example as to what we can do better to help the planet. Especially with the problems with climate change, the modern EPA is more important than ever.

Nixon's arrival in Beijing was the key in normalizing relations between the U.S and PRC. The Chinese agreed to a peaceful settlement which temporarily allowed the normalization between the U.S. and PRC despite the political status of Taiwan and opening trade and other contacts. The U.S continued to have official relations with the Republic of China in Taiwan's government and did not break off until 1979, when the U.S established full diplomatic relations with the PRC. Nixon and his assistants planned the trip to have the biggest possible impact on television audiences in the United States. The media presented Nixon communicating with Chinese government officials, attending dinners, and being accorded tours with other people of influence. IMPACT ON ME TODAY: A lot of what I purchase online whether it be through Amazon or another company like Apple is made in China. If we didn't establish trade relations with China, I wouldn't have products that I use in my daily life like my phone, ipad, headphones, and other materials that help me throughout the day.

Nixon opened the doors for women in collegiate sports when he signed Title IX in 1972, a civil rights law preventing gender bias at colleges and universities receiving Federal aid. This policy prevents any school that receives federal funding to discriminate based on sex, becoming an important moment in women’s rights. Because of this policy, many women, including myself are given the opportunity to receive an education equivalent to men and participate in activities at schools. It allows women to feel more protected when getting an education.

The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty - Foreign (Natasha)

The AMB Treaty was signed at a summit in Moscow in May 1972, and it was put into action by the U.S. Senate and the Supreme Soviet later that year. It limited each side to only two ABM deployment areas, one to protect the national capital and another to protect an ICBM launch site that could be used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles. Each deployment area had a limit of 100 launch systems and 100 interceptor missiles. A 1974 protocol reduced the agreement to one ABM site each. The idea to prohibit ballistic missile defenses was first proposed by the United States in 1966 but did was not put into account until late 1969, as part of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.

The 26th Amendment - Domestic (Vaishnavi)

A great proponent of the 26th Amendment, Nixon lowered the voting age from twenty-one to eighteen, extending the right to vote to America’s youth. Due to protests about the draft, and the fact that young men could be drafted into the Vietnam War at 18, many thought it was unfair that people of this age did not have the right to vote. This prompted government change allowing 18 year old's to vote as well. Due to this policy, people are now allowed to vote at the age of 18, meaning younger people can have a say in the country they live in. The younger generation today has more involvement in politics and with the right to vote lowered to the age of 18, they can greatly influence who wins political elections due to their political participation.

Nixon became the first President to give Native Americans the right to tribal self-determination by ending the policy of forced assimilation and returning their sacred lands. Before this, the policy for Native Americans was “termination,” which intended on destroying their culture and assimilating native peoples, however, this policy allows them to better protect their identities and have a stronger place within the United States. Prior to this policy, many people thought Native Americans were practically extinct, but now, people of my generation have grown up with the fact that Native Americans are not extinct and important parts of American society because of the early efforts of this policy.

Nixon's Ally Doctrine - Foreign (Natasha)

The U.S would support allies facing military threats with economic and military aid rather than with ground troops. The U.S could no longer afford to defend its allies fully, The United States would continue to uphold all of its treaty obligations, soo it was expected that its allies to contribute significantly to their own defense. However, Nixon assured allies that the U.S would continue to use its nuclear arsenal to shield them from nuclear threats. The Nixon Doctrine was not applied to South Vietnam, where U.S. troops were already committed. It was because of the drain of the Vietnam War on U.S. resources that Nixon created the doctrine. Even so, from 1969 onward the Nixon administration did not adhere strictly to the doctrine. The U.S. invasions of Cambodia in 1970 and Laos in 1971, for example, put U.S troops on the ground

The President recognized that the threat the Arab victory posed would be victory for the Soviet Union. The Soviet government was the Arab's chief supplier of munitions, and was attempting to spread its influence throughout the region. Operation Nickel Grass, an American airlift, was to replace all Israel’s lost munitions. Planeloads of supplies allowed munitions and materiel to spawn for Israeli counter-effort. 567 missions were flown throughout the airlift, dropping over 22,000 tons of supplies. Additionally, 90,000 tons of material were delivered by sea. It allowed Israel to expand more freely. The Soviets were not expecting the support, and soley began talking about peace when those in the Politburo realized that the Arab states could lose. After another threat of Soviet cease-fire, RN summoned the Washington Special Action Group, the Secretaries of State, Defense, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and CIA Director, and ordered that the U.S. military be put on a higher level of support. Air Force strike units were ready for attack and two aircraft carriers were ready in the Mediterranean.
