Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or DND is a progressive genetic disorder that happens mostly in males. It's caused because the people with DMD don't make the protein, dystrophin. The protein keeps the muscle intact. Without the protein it's difficult for people with the disorder to walk and move around. The older the person with DMD is, the worse it gets; by their late teens, they will most likely need a electric wheelchair and most likely won't live past their late twenties.

Males have only one copy of the X chromosome from their mother and one copy of the Y chromosome from their father.

There is no cure for DMD but there are somethings can be done to improve the quality of life of the person with the disease. Steriods is given to help with DMD because it simulates or modifies the hormone effects and it can help reduce inflamation and it can help grow and repair tissue. Another treatment is occupational therapy because it improves daily living and work skills of patients and and physical therapy because it helps restore muscle strength.
