Quote - Night

"Do you see that chimney over there? See it? Do you see those flames? (Yes, we did see the flames.) Over there—that’s where you’re going to be taken. That’s your grave, over there."

This quote stood out to me because right before this happened, Eliezer was separated from his mother and sister. This would be the last time he would ever see both of them. Now after losing almost everything besides his father, he is forced to march towards the unknown. One could only imagine the amount of dread and sorrow felt towards the site of a mass line of people walking towards their death, and that you might share their fate.

The Great Famine occurred in Ireland between the years 1845-1849. Potatoes were a staple in Ireland, so whenever the potatoes were infected, a great famine killed many people. This historical event relates to Night, because many people perish either fighting for food, or because they had little to no food at all. During these times, the lack of food was a major factor for many people's struggles.

This art piece showcasing the four horsemen of the apocalypse, was made by Albrecht Durer in 1498. Time can be seen taking its effect in Night, in many parts of the story. For example, time in the train carts going to the extermination camps killed many people. Famine played a big part in Night, being responsible for many deaths, and for many hardships people had to face. Pestilence, or disease, which was caused by the lack of nutrition and unsanitary conditions. Death, being the biggest of the four, was what millions of people endured.

Movie - Black '47

Black '47 is a movie about the Great Famine in Ireland. The movie is similar to Night in many ways. In both the movie and the book, there is a depression, as well as famine. Many people died in an attempt to find food for their families, or even just for themselves. Often this lead to either killing for food, or being killed for food.

Writing - Eldorado

Gaily bedight,

 A gallant knight,

In sunshine and in shadow,

 Had journeyed long,

 Singing a song,

In search of Eldorado.

 But he grew old—

 This knight so bold—

And o’er his heart a shadow—

 Fell as he found

 No spot of ground

That looked like Eldorado.

 And, as his strength

 Failed him at length,

He met a pilgrim shadow—

 ‘Shadow,’ said he,

 ‘Where can it be—

This land of Eldorado?’

 ‘Over the Mountains

 Of the Moon,

Down the Valley of the Shadow,

 Ride, boldly ride,’

 The shade replied,—

‘If you seek for Eldorado!’

This poem connects to the idea in Night of striving for one goal, which in this case is survival and freedom. However, in the journey of meeting this goal, comes a time of hopelessness and weakness. This can be seen with the knight falling, and having his strength fail him, in comparison to Eliezer struggling between life and death, while also losing his father. This comparison further proves the connection between this writing and Night.
