If only the south treated us the same as they treat people like them; with kindness and respect, but no- they decided to treat people like us a different way, without any of that. "If only the south had been without prejudice there would have been no war, if the north had been without prejudice the war might have been much shorter." (Hakim).
African Americans joined the war because they were being treated unfairly, they didn't have any rights and they wanted freedom.

My name is Malcolm Moc and I am from Chicago, Illinois. In May of 1863 I decided to fight for my nation and to show that African Americans can fight and to fight for my rights. "Many whites believe that blacks were ignorant and cowardly to make good soldiers but then we prove them wrong we went to the battlefield." (Hallock) I also believe that everyone should be free and should have rights to be free. I wanted to be a free farmer in the country side of Illinois and to live a peaceful life with my 2 daughters and my lovely wife.

I was very homesick , tired and I didn't feel very good I was very hungry, I spent 2 days without a meal. My feet hurt a lot, I felt very tired to fight and I got shot in my left shoulder, I also missed my family a lot- most of all my wife. I tried sending her letters but my writing skills were not very good and neither were hers so it was very difficult to communicate with her. The rebels were moving into our area to attack, so hopefully I can make it out alive to see another day. "The Confederates became enraged when they saw the black units fighting against them, and so they targeted those cavalrymen." (Hallock)

I had a beautiful family of 3, I had 2 lovely girls who both were very smart and my beautiful wife Martha. She was very thoughtful and cared about our family a lot. They all knew what I was fighting for and that was rights and supporting me to go to war. It was very hard for me to leave my most loved ones behind but it was best, I was fighting for my nations freedom and for our freedom.
