Having shame is one of the greatest things in life. Shame is a feeling of sadness that can turn into determination. It can make you want to keep on working harder to better yourself. This is because you feel bad about something so you are encouraged to fix your problems or mistakes.

I feel like with shame, more often then not you will feel sadness. But, there is a silver lining to shame as it creates determination.

Sierra from the story "A Curse, A Kindness" is a great example of a character that has shame. She is always so sad because of her curse, yet she always is striving to find the cure to her problems. She is a character with shame that is turned into determination:"Right now, her instincts beg her to choose freedom over Mia. And she cant help fighting them. This close to the possibility of no more curse. . ."(Duyvis 299)

Mia from "A Curse A Kindness" is a character that feels great amounts of sadness. She is ashamed of herself for not having any friends, but she is still always determined to make friends. A good example of this how she made friends with Sierra:"Her mom and grandmother do always say Mia should make more friends. And the girl looks lonely. like maybe she could use some kindness."(Duyvis 303)

She was hurting herself because she thought she took someone elses place. She was so hopeful to find a cure and she was seeing countless doctors: "Hafsah wished it was just a phase. Really. And no one seemed to understand that--how she really felt, how unenjoyable it truly was..."(Riazi 109) She ended up finding the "cure" after putting in high amounts of resolve.

Lihua from "The long road" had suffered labels by having her amulets. People would give her bad looks because they saw that she had some amulets on. They we're not accepting. Hasfah, from "Plus one" also got labeled under a stereotype when she went to the airport. she got stopped by a TSA agent and they did a thorough check on her because she had a hijab on.

Stigma in the story is used like shame. Most people aren't fully comfortable about taking days off for mental health: "The phrase “mental health day” might make some kids and parents uncomfortable"(Caron). Most people who don't understand mental health will try to label it as a way to skip school: "But don’t use mental health days to help your child avoid situations at school that are making them uncomfortable, he cautioned."(Caron)
