Question #5 Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?- Seth

One of the main symbols I was able to find was "grass". It symbolizes nature, life, and basically Whitman's existence. In the line "I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass." talks about feeling "ease" when observing grass. In general, the line is saying that he feels at ease when observing nature or life.

Question #6 What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea. - Samuel

The theme of this poem is to cherish yourself and the things that you have, not focus on the things that you don't have or maybe can't have. The poem focuses on atoms and everyone being born in the same place, the same soil. Stated by the lines, "My tongue, every atom of my blood, form’d from this soil, this air,

Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same," These lines are saying that everyone is born the same and no one is necessarily born better, just take what you have and live happily with it.

Question #4What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem? -Seth

The poem consists of many metaphors. One of the more enlightening metaphors I was able to find was "Hoping to cease not till death." What Whitman means by this line is he hopes that death does not come his way. He also mentions being a 37 year old in good health which would contribute to what he means in that line. This contributes to the tone and meaning of the poem because the whole poem is about life and nature.

Question #1 What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? - Samuel

The overall tone of the poem is very calming. The lines, "I loafe and invite my soul,

I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass." perfectly demonstrate this tone because the person in the poem is just loafing around watching grass. They are just chilling and that feeling follows throughout the poem.
