I could tell that Melinda was shy, but I wanted to understand why she did not tell others about what happened at the party. If she talked to someone she could have gone through the year more smoothly and not of had to suffer alone. She is the type she keeps to herself, but in the beginning I wondered why she didn't even tell family what happened.

What I infer is that Melinda's family life is not great. It never says this but her parents relationships is rocky and they are never together as a family. In the book you can see how the parents grow apart and how their secret fights become less secret. Her mother is struggling at her job. Even during a family Thanksgiving meal her mom was called because of an emergency at work. The store is losing money an the employees have lost motivation. Also her father works late so she can't see him, and when he comes home he doesn't go to see her. They never eat together and when they do they are fighting. They always fight about Melinda's grades.

The parts that are the most visualizing for me are when she describes her art projects. I can imagine them in my mind and create my own version of it in my mind while reading what her inspiration for it was. The author is very good at putting an image in your mind so most of the book was fun to imagine, but the art projects were the most vivid in my mind.

Over the summer before freshman year in high school there was a house part that Melinda and her friends went to, but she called the police to call off the party. Everyone was so mad at her. Melinda tells no one why she called the police. She struggles with her grades and social life because of all the hate everyone gives her. Finally, she tells the school how Andy Evan had made very inappropriate advancements towards her and made her do something she did not want to do. In the end she is able to reconnect with others.

Melinda relates to many people in the world. She is scared to tell her story. Many people in the world are struggling with mental illnesses or they have been hurt in the past. At first Melinda was scared to tell people at the school and even her parents what had happened that one night at the party. Other people around the world are also to scared. People think that they will be judged, but as I learned from reading this book and different experiences it is not good to keep in emotions. If you keep in your emotions it can really effect you in the future. Not all people are as brave as Melinda so they don't tell their story. But Melinda can still relate to many others around the world with feeling trapped in your own mind too scared to ask for help.

The theme of the book is to speak up for yourself even if you are scared. Melinda was so scared to tell her story, but when she did she felt amazing she stood up for what was right and did not let Andy get away with anything. She also did this with the help of her friends. They were able to help her an tell her that the was she was treated was wrong and it was right of her to stick up and push away any negative thoughts she felt at herself.

The authors writing style really make the read feel as though they are that character. It puts you in the mindset of a freshman in high school. The author show hoe small everyday things can be the most nerve racking thing in the whole world. Throughout the book you can see how bright and charismatic Melinda is on the inside but not on the outside. The author was able to show a realist way of speaking up for yourself.

Whenever I read a book I away try and take something out of it, and with this book it was able to be entertaining, motivational, and educational all at the same time.I really enjoyed the way the author described all of the students and the different ways the school works. This book was very fun to read with the witty remarks and the crazy characters pretending to be adults even though they are still young. I would defiantly recommend this to someone who hasn't read it.
