식생활은 농경지대가 없어 주로 사냥등으로 물고기등이 많다.
주로 물고기나, 순록, 백곰, 물개 등을 사냥해 식생활을 해결한다. 과거에는 대부분 이렇게 사냥으로 생계를 이어나갔지만 최근에는 툰드라 기후에 있는 많은 자원들과 군사적, 항공교통적으로 매우 중요해졌다. 따라서, 과거에는 사냥을 하던 사람들은 대부분 수렵 외에 다른 분야에도 일하고, 소수만이 수렵만으로 살아간다.

  이 지역 사람들은 주로 날고기나 날생선을 먹는다. 이는 기온이 낮아 고기가 잘 썩지 않고, 부족한 비타민을 보충하는 데 도움이 되기 때문이다. 냉동, 훈제, 염장, 건조  등 다양한 저장 방법을 이용해 식량이 부족한 때를 대비하여 음식을 비축한다. 특히 이곳 주민은 추위에 견디기 위해 많은 양의 고기를 섭취 한다.        
가옥과 옷   전통적인 가옥은 초원의 유목민과 마찬가지로 천막집이었다, 그러나 현대 문명이 도입되면서 목조 조립식 가옥이 보펴화되었다. 이 지역은 찬 바람이 적게 들어오도록 벽이 두껍고 창문이 작은 폐쇄적인 구조로 집을 짓는다. 특히 가옥을 지을 때 바닥에서 약간 띄우는데, 이는 가옥의 열기 때문에 얼어 있는 지반이 약해져 가옥이 붕괴하는 것을 막기 위한 것이다, 또, 바닥으로부터 올라오는 냉기와 눈이 쌓여 입구가 막히는 불편함 등을 다소 줄일수도 있다..
   이 지역 사람들은 추위를 피하려고 털가죽 옷을 입고, 순록 가죽으로 된 두꺼운 신발을 두 겹으로 신는다, 우리나라에서 겨울철에 많이 입는 파카와 후드티는 순록 가죽을 이어 만든 이뉴잇족의 두툼한 겨울 외투에서 유래한 것이다.
