However, the lessons are built from the ground up around the NGSS, so the focus is turned away from cookbook labs and sage-on-the-stage presenting and are instead restructured to be student-centered and minds-on where the students have to think like scientists and solve problems like engineers. Often times the piece missing in lab based curriculum in the engineering piece. Students are provided with opportunities to apply knowledge during investigations, research, and learning by "showing and doing". Students participate in the CER model of learning which requires them to define a claim, gather evidence and apply reasoning to supporting/refuting a claim. In addition, students are provided with learning experiences that require them to use the Engineering Design Process to solving problems.
