Knight Helmet

A knight’s helmet represents the difference between Mitch from the other guys. This is brought up multiple times in the play; Mitch is different. He is sensitive and more timid. He is respectful and cares for his sick mother while Stanley is smacking Stella and throwing plates on the floor like an ape. When Mitch and Blanche first meet, we immediately observe the softer personality of Mitch through his body language and how he talks, especially towards the ladies. The helmet expresses the respect Mitch has for women. As we all know, knights in medieval times were chivalrous and showed women great respect, as Mitch does with Blanche and his sick mother. “How do you do, Miss Dubois”(Williams 51). “About the same, thanks. She appreciated your sending over that custard.-Excuse me, please”(Williams 51). This pertains to the theme of the new versus old south. We can observe through the play how Mitch compares to the other guys.

Flowers

The flowers represent the care Mitch has for his mother considering she is dieing, and they show more of his gentle personality considering that flowers are fragile. Throughout the play, Mitch explains the situation of his mother to the other characters and he really cares about her. He will stand there for her until she dies. Mitch’s sensitive personality makes him more vulnerable to the other guys and their more aggressive attitude. At the end of the play he stands up against Stanley and is immediately knocked back down and he sobs. “I gotta sick mother. She don’t go to sleep until I come in at night”(Williams 47). Mitch’s vulnerability makes this object connect to the theme of the primitive and the primal to Stanley’s superiority.

Hammer

The hammer shows that despite his soft loving personality, he still has the potential of an ape like figure just like his friends. He shows is occasionally when hanging with the guys and especially when he attempts to rape Blanche. He is clearly just a strong and capable as the other common men in New Orleans. “[He still remains staring. She suddenly rushes to the big window with its pale blue square of the soft summer light and cries wildly.] FIRE FIRE FIRE[With a startling gasp, Mitch turns and goes out the outer door, clatters awkwardly down the steps and around the corner of the building. Blanche staggers back from the window and falls to her knees.”(Williams 150). This object clearly shows the primitive and the primal seeing that throughout the play there is also a food chain with Stanley at the top and Blanche down below but we can see that Mitch clearly is Blanches predator as he is also Stanley’s prey.

Silver Case

The cigarette case plays an important symbolic object that sparks the beginning of Blanche and Mitch’s relationship. Mitch reveals that it was given to him by a girl whom he loved once. This is similar to Blanche’s story because she also lost somebody she loved and something to remember him by. Blanche holds onto love letters and Mitch holds onto the silver cigarette case. The case also reveals to the audience more of Mitch’s soft sensitive side which is different from the other guys. He shows it by explaining the significance by the inscription on the back of it to Blanche. “ It sounds like a romance” “A pretty sad one” “oh?” “The girl is dead now” “Oh” “She knew she was dying when she give me this. A very strange girl, very sweet-very”(Williams 58). This pertains to the theme of loneliness since Mitch doesn’t anyone close to him who cares of him as much as his mother but she will soon die.

Mitch is a main character in the play. He is a white man just like the others in the play but instead of having a primary aggressive attitude, he is sensitive and not as ape like as the others. Right from the beginning he meets Blanche while playing Poker at Stanley's flat. Soon after, they start dating. They date for a while, and through their relationship Blanche tries to get Mitch to marry her to get her out of Elysian Fields. She lies about a lot of things to make it happen. Eventually Mitch catches on with the help of his best friend Stanley and he tells her she is not clean enough to bring in the house of his mother and he attempts to rape her. Mitch is the character who goes through a love triangle in a way and has to take sides with either his best friend in the face of reality or the girl he loves in the face of magic. He sees who Blanche really is and chooses to side with his Army buddy Stanley and for the most part life goes back to normal by the end of the play.

Light bulb / Paper Lantern

The light bulb is what represents Mitch’s thought of reality over fantasy just like the other guys however, I mention the lantern as well since Mitch was blinded by it so much throughout the whole play. Early on, Mitch helps Blanche hang the paper lantern over the lightbulb; symbolically hiding Blache’s truth with lies. But what really makes me pick the lightbulb is the fact that there is also a symbolic battle between fantasy and reality, and the fact that Mitch finally picks reality just like the other fellas after finding out the truth of Blanche. It shows that even though she is a softer character, he sides with facts and definitely feels disrespected by Blanche in that scenario. “I bought this adorable little colored paper lantern at this Chinese shop on Bourbon. Put it over the lightbulb! Will you, please?”(Williams60).
