"Ben's life would be defined by print. He signed his name, "B. Franklin, Printer." Printing made him prosperous and celebrated, and it provided him the means to political leadership. He was not a strong speaker, in an era when oratory was important to political success, and he rarely spoke in public for more than a few minutes at a time."

"Determined to prove that electricity and lightning are the same thing, he conducted his celebrated kite experiment. With his adopted son, William, he built a silk kite with two cross-sticks with a pointed wire rising one foot above the wooden sticks. At the end of the string near his hands, he fixed a silk ribbon to a key. ... He knew the string was carrying a charge. He touched the key and felt the shock of an electric spark."
