A Silent Voice is a Japanese animated film, based off of the manga of the same name by Yoshitoki Oima. The film is directed by Reiko Yoshida. It follows the story of Shoya Ishida, and how he tries to cover the mistakes he made in his life, including apologizing to the deaf girl he bullied in elementary school, named Shoko Nishimiya.

Shoya bullied Shoko in elementary school with his friends, one of the most notable things he did to Shoko, was rip out her hearing aids. After a while, Shoko transfers schools. Shoya's reputation as a bully follows him to middle school, making him depressed and suicidal in highschool. Shoya wanted to make amends with everyone who he wronged, before he'd kill himself. Shoya finds Shoko in a sign language center she attends, and apologizes.

Before a few days that Shoya would kill himself, his mother found out about his plans. So, he promised to not do it afterall. Shoya and Shoko reconnect with a few old classmates of their's. After a few weeks of this, Shoko tries to confess her love to Shoya, but Shoya misunderstood what Shoko said, and brushed it off.

One of Shoko's ex-bullies exposes Shoya's doings in elementary school, to completely clear herself of also bullying Shoko. After a few weeks, Shoko with her family and Shoya go to a fireworks festival. Shoko left early to complete her homework, but her little sister's camera was with her, so Shoya followed Shoko to retrieve it. But, when Shoya found Shoko, she was about to jump off a balcony. Shoya saved her in time, but while saving her, he fell into a river and went into a coma.

One night when Shoko was sleeping, Shoko had a dream that Shoya came to him, and told her his farewells. Shoya woke up from his coma around the same time, and made his way to a bridge, the same one that Shoya and Shoko used to feed fish at, and saw Shoko crying. He apologizes to Shoko for his bullying in elementary, and assures her that she didn't cause all the suffering in his life.

The movie ends with Shoya at his school festival, and realizes how much his friends care for him. At this realization, Shoya tears up, knowing he is redeemed for all his wrongdoings.
