Research Summary

After doing some extensive research on my topic of the portrayal and misconceptions of disabilities in fairy tales, I believe that I have learned a great deal about how characters are shown and the reasons as to why they are portrayed in such a way. From these articles, I find that disabled people tend to be characterized as villainous, monstrous, less than everyone else and the odd one out. These depictions of disabled characters in stories might be a reflection of the author's viewpoints to real disabled individuals. These viewpoints can be potentially dangerous to the design of characters in fairy tales as they can have harmful effects on its audience; this includes disabled adults, children and on a larger scope, society itself. This says a lot about able-bodied individuals and the privilege that they hold in storytelling and our society. Stories such as The Shape of Water, Beauty and the Beast, The Girl Without Hands, The Six Swans, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and etc, all play a role in the depiction of those with disabilities while countless other stories fail to address this topic entirely. I still need to learn more about different stories that have disabled characters, I want to learn more about the author's intent versus the execution of certain ideas as it relates to disability and how different time periods and nationalities affect disability in storytelling.
