What - An abortion is the expulsion of a fetus from the womb before it has developed sufficiently enough to survive on its own. If it occurs naturally it is considered a miscarriage, but if it is induced it is a "late termination of pregnancy"

When - Abortions are usually induced in the first trimester, with less in the second and rarely in the third. The actual practice of induced abortions has been present since BC times. During this time abortions would've been induced through the use of herbs, abdominal pressure, or the use of "sharpened implements". Countries began legalizing them in the early 1900's

Where - Areas in the US and UK have legalized abortions, as well as most of Asia. Some places have certain requirements that must be met, such as permission from the father of the child, while other places have banned abortions. Many locations allow abortions in special cases, such as if the mother will experience medical problems from pregnancy

Why - There are a number of reasons for undergoing an abortion procedure. Some of these reasons include health risks to mother and/or fetus, societal influence, or personal choice

Linda Weber believes that the experience of going through an abortion can be positive and life enriching. Her argument is that by having an abortion, something new can be made, such as a relationship or job opportunity that would not have been available had the woman been pregnant.

Weber is a therapist for women who have been through abortions, and she says that many of them are not conflicted about their abortion at all.

This article has some bias in it because Weber works with many women who have gone through abortions and she herself had an abortion at the age of 19 and feels that it was a good decision for her.

This article takes a number of stereotypes about abortion and its results and provides evidence and information on why they are incorrect.

There is bias in this article because it is specifically made for people who are pro-choice. Though it does address the thoughts of those who are prolife, it refutes each statement.

This article shows the results of a number of tests comparing the mental health of women who have had abortions and women who had not. The tests show that women who have experienced abortions were more likely to have mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, etc. than women who had delivered a child or had miscarriages. One quote in the article says that having an abortion has a stronger effect on the woman's mental health than a normal birth, even if the child is born from traumatic experiences.

While many people consider abortion to be female oriented, it does have an impact on men as well. This article brings to light the men's side of abortion and how it effects them. After the girlfriends or wives of these men had received abortions, they began to have problems with their relationships and they experienced some emotional problems as well. 80% of married men and 58% of unmarried men in one study thought that the man should have an equal say in their partner's abortion.

So we all know what an abortion is, but I've always been told that they just vacuum out the fetus. I wasn't sure of everything that goes into the procedure, and when I looked it up I found this. It is a basic abortion procedure, explaining the steps involved.

I want to start by saying that I respect the opinions of my group, even if I don't agree with them, and I can see where most of my group members are coming from. I understand that a woman who has been raped wouldn't have wanted to be pregnant in the first place and would probably not want the baby. However, I still don't believe it's right to abort a baby just because it's unwanted or inconvenient. I feel that, in an event when the baby/mother is experiencing health problems, it is up to the parents, but if they can do anything to save both of them they should do what they can. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I really have a problem when people bring up the argument that "A woman should have a right to do what she wants with her own body". Yes, that's true, but in this situation it's not just her body that she has to think about. The previous statement and the picture I chose for my art made me think of something I may have overlooked; do aborted babies feel pain as they die? I had always kind of figured that the baby isn't developed enough for it to fully feel pain as we know it, and if abortions can take place until the 24th week (in the US) then there has to be a point where it can feel pain. So I looked it up and was shocked to read that an unborn baby can feel pain as early as 8 weeks old and that it is believed to actually be more sensitive to pain than we are. I find this very disturbing, and as I continued to read through I was horrified at some of the content in the article, such as a recorded abortion in which you can see the baby's reaction and a procedure known as a "partial birth abortion". It may not have the same effect on everyone else, but I wanted to provide the link in case anyone wanted to read it.

This quote is very neat and accurate in my opinion. Life is a miracle and an abortion could be seen as stopping another one of God's miracles. The quote along with the picture really makes you appreciate life and all of the miracles that come with it.

The cutoff date for most abortions (week that you cannot receive one) is around 24 weeks of pregnancy, or whenever the child can survive outside the womb (with medical assistance). Is this fair, or should the woman be able to have an abortion whenever she wants? If the aborted baby is being sustained with medical technology, should the mother have to pay for the medical costs or should it be handled by the hospital/government?

I think the cutoff date rule is fair. If someone is going to be pregnant for that long they might as well go along with it. 6 months done, another 3 is not really a deal breaker. If the baby aborted were to live and sustained by medical technolohy I think the mother shouldn't be responsible for the bill. She didn't want the baby to begin with and chances are she can't afford to take care of it. So it's not right to make the mother responsible for the bills.

I believe the cutoff date should stay as it is. After that date it can become a safety issue for the mother and child. After the cutoff week the mother can start to think about adoption for the child and what is best for her too. No the mother does not have to pay for the bills once the mother gives up her rights to the child it is then put into care of the hospital and an adoption agency. The family that will take the child are then responsible for the bill of the baby. But why would the mother wait so long to have an abortion knowing that it could possibly harm her.

I feel men should have PARTIAL say, but not the final decision. Being a boyfriend and wanting to be a future husband for the woman i love, i can tell you in my p.o.v. id only support what decision is right for her. For religious reasons id give her my thoughts and suggestions, but ultimately id have to let her make the decision.

I think that the women should have the abortion whenever she wants. I mean she has to go through the pregnancy but she has to live with the decision. I know life is a very delicate thing but it is a choice. With that choice comes responsibility. But in the end it is up to the women.

I think that the cut off date is fair. If they wait that long to want an abortion they might as well keep the child. And I believe that is certain situations should the mother be responsible for paying the medical cost. Because for young women they probably can't afford it. And if they can't there should at least be help with the cost. If not free

good questions I think that the cutoff should be even earlier than 24 weeks and I do believe that a mother who chooses to have an abortion should pay the medical costs because if she doesn't who will. It's not fair to charge others who don't even agree with abortion to charge them more to cover the costs

1. Cinco de Mayo is not related to Mexican Independence Day at all. It's actually the date of a historic battle that boosted morale during a difficult war

2. The holiday has been Americanized with discounts at Mexican restaurants, sombreros, and a lot of drinking. Way to go America -_-

3. Wearing sombreros and celebrating can actually be considered offensive because the point of the day is to remember the battle and honor those that died in it

I am pro choice, but I think that once the baby can live on its own, the carrier should not have an abortion. By the time the baby can live without its mother, the mother should've had plenty of time to think about whether or not they want to have the baby or not. I am not sure if the government or the mother should have to pay. I can see why both would make sense and I really don't know which one I agree with more.

I also feel that men need a say in weather the child is aborted or not. Though I do strongly feel that if the parents can not afford to financially provide for that child then that may be a option will considerable thought.

The mother should have to pay for the baby when it is born in the hospital. She needs to take responsibility for her actions. Why should the hospital have to pay for the mother mistakes? It is safer to a deliver a baby after 24 weeks instead taking other measures and if you waited that long to have an abortion you obviously thought about keeping the baby.

I think that the man should have a say in it. I think that if he wants to keep the child then the mother should respect his wishes. I think that a woman would feel better in keeping the baby if she knew that the man would be by her side raising it and helping her in any way needed. I also believe that if a man makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with the woman or the baby then he gets no say in whether she gets and abortion or not.

I believe its good that there is a cut off date for abortions. The longer the mother waits the closer it becomes to murder. That fetus is becoming more alive and human like. To kill it is almost i humane after 24 weeks. If the baby is being sustained with medical technology then the mother should pay for it unless the baby is from a rape crime. If the woman was not raped then she should take full responsibility whether she gets an abortion or not.

I don't believe in abortion in the first place but if I did, yes, it seems fair. She should NOT do it whenever she wants because there is a reason why there is a cut off date. It's an official life they is being killed. It even looks more like murder than before real developing happens in the end. I believe since it is her baby, she should pay for it. Why should the government take responciblity for what happened to her own body like this?

I think the choice should be left up to the woman. Because she is the one carrying the child for 9 months and the one who has to give birth to the child. I can see why the man would want a say in the matter but if both parents don't want the child then it probably won't grow up in the best environment

The deadline for an abortion is very understandable. At first glance I say, I don't think a women should be able to have an abortion if the child is able to survive outside of the womb. Although I also ask myself, what if she didn't know or she was in a position where she really could not get it done in time? What if she was raped? What if she is literally dirt poor? I feel very strongly that people should have the right to their own choice and body. We do not know what the situation someone might be in and an abortion might be their only choice. I do believe that the 24 week policy is crucial and a women should be extremely careful, taking contraceptive measures.

It was said that a man should have a say in the abortion and while I agree somewhat, it is also important to remember that it is the woman who is actually carrying the baby, going through the hardships or pregnancy, and possibly struggling with having another human inside of them. I think that it is the woman who should have that ultimate decision, but the man should be allowed to give their opinion.

On another note, I am pro-choice, but I do think that there should be a cut off for when women can get an abortion. Enya DuBois makes an excellent point when she said that in cases that are not of rape, the mother had plenty of time to think about an abortion. I was wondering if anyone had any understanding of if the baby could feel the abortion at a certain point?
