(Bryan Berrios)
PURPOSE- Smoking has been an issue for a very long time. We try to keep it away from kids and several people because of it's risks. Several studies have been done on rats in order to research factors which can be decisive in a party smoker becoming a habitual smoker. Studies show that part of the brain can be connected to target-oriented behavior, such as handling cigarettes. These disturbances are transferred and established in regions of the brain which are of importance for establishing habits and drug dependency. I chose this study because I want to see the harmful effects cigarretes can do to people's brains
CONCEPTS- This article made me thing of chapter 7 on the text book. Once you have a habit it is super hard to let it go. Smoking is one of many habits that seem impossible to break. It's something you do everyday that your brain recognizes it and its just an instinct to go for the box of cigarettes. Like cognitive script in which smoking is a routine thing. As the article states smokers don't really enjoy much from smoking but it's a regular thing they cannot stop doing like brushing your teeth and taking a shower.
ASSUMPTIONS- Before reading the article I thought of the ways smoking can affect my body and how dangerous it is in the long run. There's so many ads and commercials about how smoking will affect me that this article did not surprise me at all. It's crazy how smoking doesn't affect just your lungs like everyone says but it affects your brain in giving it that habit of smoking. It gives you an easier way to see how hard it is to quit smoking.
IMPLICATIONS- I believe society will keep trying to reduce the amount of people that smoke one by one. It isn't new that people try to stop smoking but it does open our eyes and makes us understand why its so hard to stop it. The more we advance in technology and educate ourselves more the less smokers we have in the world. There's been a generous amount of people that stopped purchasing cigarettes since we became aware of the consequences, and with this new finding I'm sure it'll help people make better decision in their life.
QUESTIONS- Although this shows why people can't quit smoking out of nowhere I still wonder how hard could it possibly be? Does vaping have the same correlation with the brain like smoking do? How have we not found an easy way to make people stop smoking? Why can't we make cigarettes that don't affect the brain like that and are for everyday smokers?
Citation:
University of Gothenburg.
