Purpose: Ochs understands both sides of why people are at war. But his opinion is that there is no reason to be fighting. He is trying to make people think of reasons for why the United States should be in the war.
Significance: May cause people to rethink why they are doing what they are doing. This song could have made it to the government so they could have been thinking of why are we in this war, where we are just losing men everyday. He is questioning the reasons for taking the nation into war.

"And before you walk out on your job and answer to the call
Just think about the millions who have no job at all"
Purpose:   "answer to the call" Referring to recruitment for the army. Men should not be giving up jobs that they have worked hard at to go fight in a war that most people don't know the reason for. Hes saying that before you willingly go and fight for the country and leave your job think about the poor who are being drained of money for the war. And not to take it for granted.
Significance: persuading men to not go into the war and become soldiers because they want to keep their jobs so they can support their families and build up the econony. Instead of going away and into a war that is not looking good for America.

"If you'll win the wars at home, there'll be no fighting anymore." Purpose: There is so many protests and a lot of violence coming out of this war and into the communities and mainly college campuses because they think that there is no reason to be involved in a war that does not concern America. Also when war veterans were coming home there were treated extremely poorly by the people because there thought that the soldiers were going against their beliefs and thoughts about the war.
Significance: With all the violence from the protests there were people dying and there were shots being taken towards people who were against their beliefs. Causing there to always be mass chaos everywhere. The Vietnam war veterans didn't want to be recognized for the risks that they took for the country because they wanted people to just leave them along. Justification: This picture shows that many families are without homes. One of the many problems citizens are dealing with at home. Phil Ochs talks about how we should be building up our own country before fighting other country's wars because he believes that there were many instabilities in society at the time we decided to join.


Justification:This picture shows that the American economy is suffering due to money being taken away from the poor in order to support financial requirements of the war. This is shown by the children rugged clothing and paper made shelter in the background. Another reason that Phil Ochs uses to support the idea of anti-war


Justification: This picture shows that there are protests at home representing that the society is corrupting because they are upset about decisions being made about the war specifically young men being drafted. Family, loved ones being taken away. This is alluded in the song in the second lyric.

This song is mainly about social issues such as the protests and violence that is occurring all around the country mainly on the west coast. There were also political issues that could have been inferred by this song because Ochs is asking why are we in the war and what are we fighting for. That is towards the government, as asking them why are you putting our troops and people through this? Probably makes the Americans think, it should be America first. Also put the citizens first.
He is also saying that instead of involving ourselves in the war, maybe we should focus our powers on rebuilding the crumbling infrastructure of America.
