Year 11 - Why are they still here?

The year 11s staying around the building and not going on study leave has put strain on departments especially when exams are over and they are saying they are 'having fun' in lessons. This also became a problem during the inspection as people didn't want year 11 messing in Cafe Mojo or waltzing around the building so they were sent back with 15 minutes left of the lesson which again stressed out teachers who hadn't planned anything for them to do. A bank of revision materials that could have been shared for year 11 lessons while they are still here also would have been helpful.

If it is highlighted by a teacher, it takes way too long for the pass to be removed.

By giving our pupils far too much control, it allows them to be rude and disrepectful when challenged.

There has been a noticeable drop in yr11 behaviour since starting their exams.

Many in my dept find that students are arriving as and when they like to lessons and that their attitude towards learning and revision has deteriorated massively, despite still having upcoming exams in our subject!

When threatened with lates, ambers and reds, we have been told by students that they don't get sanctions any more.

This coupled with the fact that they aren't being made to complete revision in lessons where their exams have finished have led to us feeling like we are almost babysitting students and no worthwhile learning is happening.

We agree with another post that a bank of revision materials could have been shared that students are required to complete in lessons where their exams are finished.

We also understand that sanctions are difficult when students have exams, however these should not be stopped completely!

This will not be good for staff well being or a very good use of time.

The majority of students did not enjoy being their form tutor period 5 on the last day. They found it very boring. For some staff form time can be very challenging in terms of behavior. Some staff will be put on supervision so that basically means they don't have to do anything. Attendance will be very low anyway.

We have been told that the trust have said we aren't allowed half day finishes anymore however this is not the case in other trust schools in Manchester?

There is no communication to teaching staff when students are new to the school, and just turn up at your door telling you they are now in your class meaning we are unprepared and have no prior knowledge - what are their needs/abilities?

It would only take a quick email when their timetables are being written to let the teacher know. This has happened to me 6 times already this academic year, as well as other staff across the school.

Similarly there doesn't appear to be thought put into where students are being placed other than looking at class sizes and putting them into a smaller one, leading to students being placed into a class that is not appropriate for their ability.

Some of these events were great don't get me wrong, Culture day was amazing, but everything 'fun' seems squished or difficult for staff to take part in. Having fun with the kids would improve well being and create better relationships.

There are large numbers of students who are not completing homework and it doesn't seem to be challenged.

This will have a knock on effect in Y11 and is also demoralising for staff who are contacting large numbers of students every fortnight.

There is also no QA of homework across subjects, so students are saying that there is no homework set by some teachers, or that they are allowed to complete it in class. Without consistency, this system will not work, so perhaps another homework launch is required to re-state the expectations around this.

There has been a huge rise in phones and airpods on corridors and in the atrium. Personally, I have raised this before because I often see it go unchallenged by SLT when I'm on duty in the atrium. It is then very difficult to challenge because they have just walked past a senior member of staff (sometimes whilst on a phone call) and nothing has been said. This was a basic expectation that we were getting right that has slipped.

I do sometimes wonder if we are doing too much, and in the process are dropping some plates as we have so many spinning at once. A 21 period timetable is brutal! I am having to deal with pupils asleep, head on the desk, no kit or book, challenging teacher's judgement etc and wonder if all the amazing work we have done on schemas and pedagogy is being lost on these pupils. Very annoying when they start packing away early and then all the other students think that this is there signal to start packing away as well.
