The Willow Project has its pros and cons to it. There are many opinions that come with this “$8 billion Willow oil project” (Friedman 1). Even with the very likely environmental and climate impacts that it will have, the Biden administration gave formal approval for the oil drilling project. This would all take place inside the petroleum reserve “which has no roads, is the country’s largest single expense of pristine land.” (Friedman 1) In the next thirty years, it is predicted that this will be able to produce more than 600 million barrels of oil. With all this production, it “could release nearly 280 million metric tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.” (Friedman 1). This can also be looked at as adding two-million cars to the road every year. Those advocating for the project are people like labor unions, building trades, and even residents from the North Slope. Those who want to see this project taking action argue that it will create 2,500 jobs and get the federal government a revenue of $17 billion revenue. This project has caused many environmental activists and Native American communities to fight the project through meetings with federal officials, campaigns, protests, etc. Many of these climate activists refer to this project as the “Carbon Bomb”. Many people who focus on saving the earth from this project are considering taking legal challenges. The administration is continuing to take action with this project even with the concerns that follow it such as “emissions, danger to freshwater sources and threats to migratory birds, caribou, whales and other animals that inhabit the region.” (Friedman 1). Although all of this land is allowed to be used during the drilling, it was declared that the entire Artic Ocean will be off limits. Even though whales, seals, and polar bears will be able to keep the water for habitat, millions of acres will still be taken away from them.

With the Biden administration approving such a big project, we will see affects from it very shortly. There is some good that will be taken away from this $8 billion project, but a lot of our wildlife and earth will be harmed in the process of it. As the project will not take place for another few years, there is still time to put an end to it. Those who work with our environement and speak for it are doing what they can to end the disaster from happening. We will see a rapid production of oil along with thousands of new jobs being created, but there will be no point if we just release more carbon into the atmosphere than there is now. This project will bring a lot of revenue for the federal government, but we do not know where that money will be put to use. Biden is contradicting his original campaign and getting many of his voters upset. There are a few laws that were put up during Obamas presidency that protects the Arctic ocean, but hundreds of acres will still be dedicated to the project. We will not see a chnage right away as the project will not fully start until everything is officially approved. There is still work that has to be done, but I know now that there are still ways to stop the oil project, and the point of it now. I better understand the pros of it, but still think the cons should outweigh continuing the work. With this new information, I want to focus on where the money will be going once the project gets going. I am curious if the government will keep it or use it towards the community. I want to see in my essay if the pros will outweigh the cons.
