St. Joseph discovered his betrothed Mary had became pregnant with a baby that couldn't have been his. Instead of being like most men at the time, and turning his wife in to be stoned to death for Adultery, he sent her away quietly so that she wouldn't be exposed to shame or cruelty. St. Joseph later found out that she was pregnant with the son of god in a dream. (He really dodged a bullet deciding not to kill the mother of the son of god)

St. Joseph had much devotion to both his wife Mary, and his son Jesus. When the same angel that told him about his unique son in a dream came back to tell him that his family was in danger, St. Joseph ditched all his properties, friends, and family, and fled to an unfamiliar place, Egypt. He waited there without question until the angel told him that it was safe to return to his home.

St Joseph was not a flashy or rich man by any means. He instead valued serving his family and other members of his community by using his skills as an artisan and carpenter. It is easy to see such traits shown in his son, Jesus. Jesus was a selfless man, who devoted his own life to die for our sins.

He was of course, instructed by an angel to make the move. It was at Nazareth where he would carry out his daily tasks as a carpenter/man of the trades. He ended up passing many of his skills to Jesus, which would lead him to follow in his fathers footsteps to become a carpenter.

God is Experiential

St. Joseph has exemplified many of the Core Beliefs throughout his lifetime, however, one of the most prominent ones shown in his story is "God is Experiential". God first reveals himself to Joseph by sending an angel to communicate with Joseph one night in his dreams. The angel said something along the lines of "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy spirit that this child has been conceived through". This event in Joseph's life exemplifies that God is Experiential because of multiple details. Firstly, Joseph's revelation happens during an every-day activity, dreaming, which reflects the randomness that can be felt when a revelation happens. Lastly, we will never fully know why God chose this way to reveal this to Joseph, or how he put an angel in a dream, but nevertheless, the Angels warning to Joseph was a crucial thing in all three of the family members life's and shows the care that god has for each individuals situation. In other words, this angel was kind of like a "clue" that someone was looking out.

God is Relational

Yet another Core Belief that is showcased in Joseph's life is "God is Relational". A time after Jesus' birth in Bethlehem another angel showed up in another dream of Joseph's. The angel told Joseph to leave to Egypt, as where he was currently staying wasn't safe. Without hesitation, Joseph moved his entire family from Bethlehem to Egypt, only returning when it was safe. Joseph unknowingly saved his family from the massacre of the innocents. This event took place when king Herod- ruler of Judea, killed 144,000 children in attempt to kill the infant Jesus. What we can take away from this is the troubles god went through to keep Jesus alive! God did this because he wanted to keep his relationship strong with both Mary and Joseph, and keep his relationship alive with Jesus (they couldn't have a relationship if he were dead.) Since god was so involved with them, he was willing to alter the course of their lives to keep them thriving. God is the same way with everyone, as long as you are close with him, he will make sure your life is wonderful and prosperous. He may give you advice that causes sacrifice and hardship, (ex: moving your family from Bethlehem to Egypt) but in the end, listen! You will thank me later!

Grad @ Grad (Loving)

Joseph shows his Grad @ Grad skill of loving through his relationship with Mary. Imagine the immense let-down Joseph felt when Mary became pregnant with a baby that wasn't his. Imagine the happiness when the angel told him that it was the son of God! What a roller coaster! Joseph managed to persevere through all of this, and then at the end take Mary as his wife, knowing full well that she was pregnant with the biggest commitment of all, the son of God! To have the skill of loving at graduation, the graduate must move beyond self-interest or self-centeredness in relationships. Joseph shows just that, being married to the mother of god wouldn't always be easy, and Joseph knew this, but he still wanted to marry her because of his love and willingness to help guide her through her future.
