I Created this Book Box for Lola. She is in Second Grade and is 8 years old. Lola like spending time with family and playing sports. She loves finding new books to read to her family before bed. She is reading at a second grade level but reads at a pretty slow pace. These are the books I selected for her book box.

"A Bike Like Sergio’s" by Maribeth Boelts

I chose this book for Lola because it blends sports and moral lessons, as it follows a young boy who dreams of having a bike like his friend. Lola might enjoy the relatable themes of honesty, dreams, and playing with friends. It is meant for grades 1-3 so Lola will be able to read through it at her own pace.

"Dream Big" by Deloris Jordan

I chose this book because it highlights the importance of family support and perseverance, themes that resonate with her love for family and sports. Lola loves anything to do with sports so she would love this book. It is for grade levels 2-3 so may give her some struggle but if she takes her time she can get through it.

"Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt de la Peña

This is an award winning book so it is already a good book to read. With Lola reading this book she will be able to see an example of a different family structure. Since Lola like reading to her family so much this would be a good book for her to read to them. This book is only 34 pages so Lola won't get too frustrated on the time it will take to read this story.

"Ladybug Girl and Bingo" by David Soman and Jacky Davis

I chose this book for Lola because it focuses on family, pets, and play, themes that Lola might connect with, especially because she enjoys spending time outdoors. This is a very simple book that Lola can read and won't be very challenging but she will be able to connect to the themes throughout the story and have some more love for the outdoors.

I chose this book because it is going to be a little more challenging for her to read because it is a third grade level book. Since Lola is a girl I think in this story, just like the character is "too small" doesn't mean he can't accomplish his goals. I want Lola to read this book and think "just because I am a girl does not mean I can't do certain things."

"The Proudest Blue" by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S. K. Ali

This story is written by a female Olympic athlete. Since Lola enjoys playing sports she can see herself within this story because she is an athlete but also seeing a difference in cultures. It encourages empathy and understanding of different cultures, and is simple enough for Lola to read at her pace.
