The constant need for specialty clay work led to long hours which caused many women to get sick. The constant exposure and inhalation of the silica dust found in most clays, was causing trouble for workers. Workers were diagnosed with silicosis. Silicosis is a lung disease that is caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust. The disease is known to progress more quickly for women than for men. Pesticides carry numerous amounts of different chemicals which can cause health effects ranging from as little as skin irritation to serious health effects causing damage to the baby's brain, organs and nervous system. Anencephaly is known to be the number one condition that can be cause by pregnant women being exposed to pesticides.
