A while ago, the pottery business was booming. The constant need for specialty clay work led to long hours which caused many women to get sick. The constant exposure and inhalation of the silica dust found in most clays, was causing trouble for workers. Workers were diagnosed with silicosis. Silicosis is a lung disease that is caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust. The disease is known to progress more quickly for women than for men. This usually doesn't occur in developed countries, so when people started getting sick, many were scared and didn't know what to do.

In floriculture or flower farming industries, there's a huge issue regarding female workers not only getting sick, but for some experiencing the loss of an unborn child. Pesticides carry numerous amounts of different chemicals which can cause health effects ranging from as little as skin irritation to serious health effects causing damage to the baby's brain, organs and nervous system. Anencephaly is known to be the number one condition that can be cause by pregnant women being exposed to pesticides. Anencephaly is known to have babies born with a large part of their skulls, scalps and brains missing. Its recommended that pregnant women stay away from pesticides so that no harm is done.

A food crop called cassava, is a popular nutrient rich woody shrub. It cannot be eaten unprocessed since it carriers high levels of cyanide. In Nigeria, women are the ones that take care of crops and then process them by first washing them, peeling and even sometimes grating the tuberous root. The tuberous root can give off cyanide in the water when first being processed. Workers are
