The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a major uprising in India in 1857–58 against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown.
The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in the garrison town of Meerut, 40 mi (64 km) northeast of Delhi. It then erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions chiefly in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, though incidents of revolt also occurred farther north and east.

Political Causes
The main political cause for the great revolt of 1857 was the policy of Doctrine of Lapse. It was an annexation policy purportedly used by Lord Dalhousie as per which any princely state or territory under the British East India Company would automatically be annexed if the ruler died without a male heir.

Immediate Causes
The introduction of the ‘Enfield Rifle’ was the immediate cause of the Revolt 1857 because it was of the opinion that the cartridge of the Enfield Rifle had to be bitten before using it. The cartridge was made up of pork and beef. For Hindus, beef was considered impure because they worshiped the sacred animal cow. On the other hand, Muslims considered pork as impure and this led to the introduction of Revolt 1857.
