Since I am currently operating on an emergency permit for teaching students with disabilities, I have looked forward to this class. I enjoyed learning about the history for teaching those with disabilities. It was eye opening for me to see that even when society institutionalized people with disabilities, they had some of the right theories and ideologies. Ideologies that have contributed to our current pedagogy. I like the idea of focusing on all three elements of teaching students with disabilities: place, professionalism and program. Although, as the article stated, we still have a way to go. There still exists a lack of equity in our public schools, as Dr. Noguera mentioned in his interview. I believe that the public school systems try to provide the highest of standards for all students, but struggle when it comes to providing the best at all times for students with disabilities. I also enjoyed reading the article on the proper language to use when speaking of students with disabilities. I am a person who strongly believes that words carry power. The words we speak to our students should build them up and encourage. It also made me consider the feelings of the parents of these students. They too need an encouraging word: to know that a hope lies within their child like any other child.
