Grand Weddings/Arranged Marriages/Career Path - Pakistan

Many cultures around the world have arranged marriages and by no means is this a totally bad thing. There is this misconception, especially in the west, that arranged marriages = forced marriage... this is not true.

Statistics show that even today, there are great number of arranged marriages that are successful and the couple grow to be happy. But of course, there is the sad reality that some arranged marriages are indeed forced marriages due
to things like family pressure and such.

Personally, I don't think the concept of an arranged marriage is bad, but I do dislike how engrained it is in our culture, especially for women. It is kind of expected for the arrangement to happen and there is a bit of a stigma and turning away when men/women seek out love marriages.

This is something I believe should change as a marriage should be done as the couple involved want: arranged by parents/family if you want or if you meet someone on your own and form a relationship.

On the topic of weddings, another common tradition of many cultures is those of grand weddings... inviting huge amount of people, spending insane amounts of money, large venue, many days to the entire wedding procedures and so on.

This is something that many families demand from a new couple and is something I vehemently disagree with. A wedding should be at the purview of the couple being married. They should be the ones to decide how big a wedding is, who to invite, how much they want to spend and so on... not the family or friends.

Dealing with such arrangements can involve the local government in way. Maybe providing the new couple that ability or legal means to reject/deny large wedding unless they themselves agree to it. Or by requiring large weddings to have the explicit signed/legal approval of both sides of the family so that one family can't pressure the other.

Speaking of family pressure and influence, a tradition that sees itself persisting till this day is that of the parents, especially the father, pressuring and basically deciding the career future of their kids. Now there is nothing wrong with a parent's advice and guidance, I mean, who better to get it
from... but some parents like to force their kids into the typical two choices: doctor or engineer.

The landscape of the working environment has greatly changed since the days of our parents/grandparents... back then, it was more that by becoming a doctor or engineer you were getting into the high paying and safe career. Parents take on from their own experience and knowledge and it can be seen wit how many kids are basically forced into the
parent's choice rather than their own.

These days, there are so many more options and paths that one can take to a job that is not only well paid, but secure and of meaning to the person. Parents need to be explained and educated that there current job market and choice of career is so vast, a child can go into whatever career path they want.

This education can come from expanded efforts by local governments to advertise the many open career paths, introducing more information sessions to schools for parents and graduating students to have access to, local career explanation events or career fairs at schools or local areas for families to attend.

Dowry System in India

India is the worlds largest populated democratic country and it has the strongest constitution and laws than any other country. Laws are created to replace the unevenly old, traditional methods which make citizens life easier. Eventhough laws changed the old system, there are still some old practices that give headache amongst the people of India and one of them is the Dowry System.

Dowry System was practiced during the pre-colonial Era. After Independence, India created several laws to prevent the giving and taking of Dowry. As years passed, it is still happening in India. There are many cases where Dowry lead many families to Bankrupt, atlast leading to suicide. Prevention and banning of Dowry is now becoming a very important part of the Indian society. If I will be the handler for preventing dowry, i will perform some effective measures to prevent Dowry. People should stand together and raise their voice with unity. Nothing is effective if there is no unity.

1) Awareness: People should be well known and be aware to prevent their family from dowry. If the grooms family demand specific amount of Money, leave their offerings and back out from that marriage case. In some cases, there will be demand for dowry after marriage. Due to this, the bride has to face harassment both physically and mentally. Do not bear the pain. Be brave, get out of grooms house and file a complaint against him.

2)Advicing: There are families who demands dowry without grooms concern. Under such circumstances, the groom should convince and advise his parents to opt out of Dowry.

3)Dowry Pledge: Marriage is a gift from Allah. Do not make it a troubled one by demanding dowry. We all should pledge to disband dowry. We should remove and clear all our greedy needs. It is said that, a man who marries his bride without drowry, he is a real man with dignity and honour.

Remember, every dowry demand is a threat, so walk away.

Thank You,
Ameen Sidhik(1181302364)

Toll in Wedding Ceremony

In Malay's culture of certain states, we have this thing called 'toll' during wedding ceremonies. This 'toll' is usually done when the groom wants to enter the bride's house to meet the bride who is waiting on the aisle. There will be children and women waiting at the door asking the groom to give them money (toll). Once the groom paid, then he can meet his wife.

This custom is considered to be outdated. Most of the wedding ceremonies nowadays are not doing this custom anymore. This custom is considered a burden to the groom as he will need to prepare extra money whilst also paying for other things.

In Malaysia, all malay is considered as muslim and this much power given to the mother is no where in Islamic teaching. As a Muslim, father should be the one that make the decision as they are the 'wali' for the girl. We are not in the era of P. Ramli anymore where parent choose who the girl should married too.
I think that
1)Young people should be given more space and freedom to choose their soulmate.
2) father should be more dominant
3) the ceremony should be based on the couple capability and not on "the mother's wedding dream".

In my community, when there's a death of someone which we called an arwah, the family of the arwah will conduct a ceremony known as tahlil as in Islam. I as a Muslim does not against the practice of tahlil, instead I think it's good for the dead (as my belief in Islam, the recitation of the Al-Quran verses can help him/her in the afterlife). But in Malay culture within my community, usually the family of the arwah will prepare a feast for the people that came to the ceremony to recite some of the Al-Quran verses for arwah. This is okay for me, if the family has a strong financial capabilities, but what about for the less fortunate families whom not just lost one of their family member but have to spend a huge amount of money for the food? Instead why not we as an ummah and community prepare the feast for the arwah instead of his/her family.

There is this one culture that Malay used to do which is "Mandi Bunga" or floral bath. The floral bath is a traditional cleansing ritual practiced to ward off evil and illness and to bring good fortune and luck by the Malays in Malaysia. Usually, the Malays will perform this before their wedding day. -Besides flowers, Kaffir Lime ( Limau Purut ) and pomelo ( Som-O ) leaves are commonly used ingredients in the mandi bunga ritual. The Malays believe that bathing with kaffir lime can dispel evil and bad luck. The fruit is cut and blended with plain water and flower petals and then bathe with as part of spiritual cleansing.

In my opinion, it is outdated and also deviating from Islam's teaching since this is considered as "khurafat" or superstition. We as muslims must believe in qada' and qadar for everything that happens to us. Besides, we must believe that everything happens for a reason. However, we can still practice this culture as long as our intention is not against Islam's teaching.

In Sudan, Funerals are usually 3 days and people who are related to the deceased gather around and pay their condolences which is a good thing. In general, funerals take around 2-3 days as maximum. What I see as an outdated custom is when people overstay their welcome; By that i mean when people who usually come from further away places such as villages and small town on the outskirts of the capital or a larger city and stay for a week or sometimes even more. I do understand their case that says they should be able to stay for a longer period of time but in my opinion i think it abuses the kindness and welcoming of the sudanese people.

The Saudis on the other hand have an unspoken rule or custom, where people who want to visit the close family of the deceased and pay their condolences have a 3 day window. It is known in Saudi Arabia that you shouldn’t visit the family of the deceased to pay respects after 3 days.

I think we as Sudanese people should take a page out of the Saudi culture and start having a 3-day maximum for a funeral no matter how important or how close the visitors are to the deceased.

I consider this outdated as luck is something unseen and it is only used as a scare tactic to make young people to use right hand at all times. I would revise this saying as “receiving money, food and other items with your left hand can be disrespectful towards people offering you the item”

The result is that the wedding has to be postpone to a later date about 100 days and this might not be so flexible in today's modern day where date of the wedding dinner, hotel rooms, guest list, etc. has all been plan and set way before this time period.
I would revise it by reducing this time period or just abolish it. I personally experience this as my brother had to revise the wedding day 3 months later after my grandma's passing, because he had to respect his mother-in-law practices.

The virgin will be prepared by a handyman and will manage all the work of preparing the bride. The idea of preparing is that the woman who wants to be married needs to be shaved and shape of her eyebrows then, the teeth of the virgin will be sharpened with a type of stone so that the size and position of teeth can be seen evenly. All of this is done by old-fashioned elders with a good purpose, which is to add beauty to the virgin women. To me, sometimes this is something excessive and really tiring for the newly-married couple to satisfy their family. It is quite tiring because usually they need to attend the wedding banquet for both bride and bridegroom side. Besides of wedding banquet, normally there are a lot Chinese ritual that need to be done on the newly married couple at the wedding night. There are also many thinks to prepare and deal with at the wedding day. It is quite often to hear that either bride or bridegroom is sick the next day due to over-exhausted. So, to me, i think it is better for the family to let the newly married couple to decide whether they want to have wedding banquet or not and how big they want the banquet to be (because some people like the banquet to be small and only for those close relative and friends).

Some of the customs created by the ancestors are excessively conservative as compared to the living lifestyle of this day; even the technologies evolved so should the practice of the cultures.

In malay community, the culture that I have found outdated was the culture of not going out at night and come back in midnight. Previously, this culture is assumed to be the most compulsory rule for children and teenagers. The reason is because the parents wanted to avoid unwanted problems happened when they go out at night either alone or with friends. Usually, the children will go out at night with parents only. Nevertheless, this rule or culture seems to be neglected as the time goes and become outdated especially to those teenagers who have finished their secondary school and to students in which currently having their school break. Why I assumed that this is outdated? It is because parents nowadays are usually busy with their work and sometimes they got back home during midnight, therefore the children feel that it is okay to go outside at night and hanging out with friends.
Hence, if I were given a mandate to revise it, I will do a lot of campaigns to promote parenting skills towards 'busy' parents. Besides, as a teenager, I will share with them the beneficial things that we can do at home.

It is common to Malay muslim In our homeland, when death occurs in a family, the deceased's family member will provide food and drink. Normally, the deceased's family will cook and prepare the foods according to the number of people who are present at the funeral or according to the number of people involved in helping them. In short, entertaining food and drink after death has been the task of death by the deceased, whether they are rich or poor. If they aren't doing it, they will be seen by the surrounding people for not following the customs.
For me customs like this does not have to be continued in our country anymore. In Islam also states that we can not burdened the family of the deceased because of the misfortune that has happened to their family. It is better for us to give them food and needs instead of received it from deceased's family to lighten their burden, especially that the family is in poverty.

Chastity is considered one of the main virtues of Sudanese culture. Among other things, it is seen as a defining characteristic that a woman should have, and unchaste women are persecuted socially and, in cases where they are caught being 'unchaste', legally.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a widely practiced custom in Sudan. In rural areas, people are guided by this custom such that the majority of women have undergone FGM. This custom is practiced because the general mentality in these areas is that a woman shall remain 'untouched' until marriage, and since FGM results in the supposed removal of the female libido, it is seen as the method of ensuring a woman remains chaste.
There is no scientific evidence that FGM is healthy or beneficial. In fact, most scientific research has found that it results in a wide variety of diseases and conditions that stump a woman's sexual growth and health, leading to their inability to give birth naturally and making them prone to infections. It is even stated in many religious (Muslim) literature that it should not be done, as it does more harm than good.
Given the mandate to revise this custom, I would completely abolish it. I would seek to educate the masses on the dangers of FGM and remind them that the supposed liberal media that shuns FGM is, in fact, correlating to Muslim teachings. The custom of FGM should be removed entirely from the traditions of Sudan, not just for the protection of girls, but also for the health of communities.

I come from the state of Johor where it is very common in a wedding ceremony that a bridegroom always has to ‘bayar tol’ whenever he wanted to get to the bride during the wedding reception ceremony. I found it very unnecessary to practice that kind of culture of giving a token of money to the bridesmaids before you can get to the brides. It is somehow excessive and wasting of money. The bridegroom has already provide dowry for the purpose of marrying the brides and I don’t see that there’s a need to spend more for ‘bayar tol’ to the bridesmaids. Marriage should be modest.

One of the customs that I think is not reasonable today is when malay people wanted to marry. The man has to give a (money) “hantaran” to the woman. The outdated thing is the amount of money that is needed to sent depends on the education of the woman. E.g. If the woman has diploma, the man has to sent approximately RM 5000, this depends on the female’s side of the family and it will rise exponentially with higher education level like degree, master, phd and etcetera. To me this is outdated because the money could be funnel to future investment like buyying house, savings for the future accidents. Furthermore, some people could not afford to accumulate the amount of money needed, because of student loan, small salary and high cost of living. Hence, this will cause them to go into debt so as to get the money, they will borrow money from banks and loan sharks. Additionally, the borrowing of money also have additional charges like interest.
