I dont believe Lincoln gave them freedom because he basically gave them false hope, he told the saves that they should rebel in order to earn their freedom but if they were to get caught they would go right back to slavery, he claims to be helping the slaves but is on the white side.

No lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves because he couldn't free slaves he was just the commander in chief and not enough people would agree on his side to pass that law because the south would disagree. Also he didn't give them a choice because if they wanted to be free they had to fight on the same side as the US or stay a slave . That's not free they had no choice because both were bad choices and it put them in a loop whole.

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves because he was focusing on the enemies of the union but, not the states which haven't been proven against it so his only option was to free the slaves from the enemy territory but not the ones who they were at conflict with.

Lincoln's Emancipation of independence did not free the slaves his main goal was to put the union back in place but there wasnt an exact move in to geting rid of it completely . Thats why it was called the first step . - Evette serrano
