The freshman fifteen is a term commonly used to describe the first year of college and the weight gain of typically 10-15 pounds. The freshman fifteen typically happens because students are now in charge and have the liberty of being in charge of their own diets and the amount of time they eat per day. College students also have a limited budget and typically fast food and junk food tends to be the cheapest and quickest meals and snacks for a on the go student.

My personal connection to health and being conscious of what you are intaking into your body comes from doing a sport year round and deciding to quit the sport so instead of excersizing all the time I was still eating like the year round athlete without the athletics. Diet is 80% and excersize is 20% of your fitness. I had to start eating better and get back on track with my other sport and excersize.
