This was a time of confusion and disagreement of what the next steps would be. This is highlighted in the way that Booker T. Washington and Dubios had very different visions for reconstruction. This speech also shows the battle within the community of Africans in the south, and the hardships of taking the next steps. Specifically, the dog represents a freed slave. The dog is exploring his freedom and is doing fine which represents a slave just freed trying to start his life. Then the little boy took over and did whatever he wanted with the dog, like the white progressives. The boy then became very close with the dog and talked to him like a friend. The dad was very mad when he came home to find this dog. Over time, the dog and boy became very close. Although the dog was regularly beaten by the family members and it never held a grudge. The dog grew up and became inseparable with the boy. One night, the drunk dad came home and angrily threw the dog out the window.
