In chapter eighteen of "Every Song Ever" by Ben Ratliff he discusses the musical element of linking. Linking in music is rhythm and form of the music. It is not repetition or metric. Linking in music is when a song is able to push ahead, spread out. Each note, each section different than the last, yet somehow still staying together. The music seems to move forward, move out, unfolding. While it has very different sections, notes, and is ever forward moving it is concise. It appears to the listener and is conveyed to the listener, ever through the differences, that it is on thought out, out together idea. That it came from one solid idea, and moved from that one idea, outwards to make an entire piece. This can be seen in ratlin's example Gabriel Fauré, Andante Moderato from Piano Quietet no. 2, op. 115, 1919-21, Quatuor Ysaÿe, Pascal Rogé. Though it appears to not have a plan, the music stems from one idea and push out and spreads out.
